The article contains the description of the basic aspects of civil aviation security seen from the point of view of an airport reality, particular stress being laid on the role of the airport authority, legal environment as well as technical systems and equipment deployed at the airport for the purpose of protection against acts of unlawful interference. In particular, the article contains the description of the following phenomena: basic tasks and responsibility of the airport authority; tools in the disposal of the airport authority, enabling supervision over security matters, i.e. Airport Security Program and Airport Security Committee; the role of up-to-date technical systems in their contemporary applications as well as trends of AVSEC technology development for the nearest years. The article also points out strong and weak points of applied technologies, particularly those related to baggage and passenger screening. Special attention was drawn to the growing role of ‘Human Factor’ and methods of improving the quality of the job performed by screeners with respect to the level of aircraft and airport facilities protection against acts of unlawful interference. The development of adaptive training for screeners, based on the third generation of TIP systems is the strongest support for the weakest element within the chain of security system, ensuring that huge financial investments in security are effectively implemented.
