Plates of AZ91 cast magnesium alloy with a thickness of 3.5 mm were butt-welded using a laser power of 2000 W and helium as the shielding gas. The effect of the welding speed on the weld cross-sectional geometry and porosity was determined by microscopic analysis. It was found that to avoid the formation of macropores, welding should be carried out at a speed of 3.4 m/min or higher. Non-equilibrium solidification of the laser-melted metal causes fragmentation of the weld microstructure. Joints that were welded at optimal laser processing parameters were subjected to structural observations using optical and scanning microscopy and to mechanical tests. The mechanical properties were determined through Vickers hardness measurements in the joint cross-section and through tensile testing. The results indicate that the hardness in the fusion zone was about 20 HV (30%) higher than that of the base material. The weld proved to be a mechanically stable part of the joint; all the tensile-tested specimens fractured outside the fusion zone.
AZ91 alloy was cast in a steel mould pre-exposed to three different temperatures: -196 ºC, 20 ºC and 650 ºC. The aim of the study was to determine the difference in the microstructure and mechanical properties between the castings formed in a cold mould and those solidifying under near-equilibrium conditions in a mould pre-heated to 650 ºC. Solidification at a low temperature led to dispersion of the structure elements as well as supersaturation of the solid solution of aluminium in magnesium. The heat treatment results indicate that the alloy solidified in the mould pre-exposed to 20 ºC can be successfully aged (heat treated to the T5 temper). It was found that the effect of the ageing process (T5 temper) was greater than the effect of the microstructure fragmentation, which was due to rapid solidification. The ageing results were assessed by comparing the microstructure and mechanical properties of AZ91 brought to the T5 condition with those obtained for the material in the T6 condition.

Magnesium alloys are a part of a group of lightweight alloys, which are important in practical use in constructions. The paper shows the results obtained by research into welded AZ91 magnesium alloy. Within the scope of research microstructure examination and tensile testing were done. Magnesium alloy was welded by two methods – 141 (TIG) and 522 (laser gas welding). The values of tensile strength of welded joints in majority cases were higher than values of tensile strength of the base material. The microstructure examination and chemical analysis made it possible to explain the phenomena occurring in the AZ91 during welding.

Stopy magnezu należą do grupy stopów metali lekkich, używanych w konstrukcjach. W artykule przedstawiono wyniki uzyskane w czasie badań złączy spawanych stopu AZ91. Wykonane zostały: obserwacja mikrostruktury i próba jednoosiowego rozciągania. Złącza zostały wykonane metodą 141 (TIG) i 522 (spawanie laserem gazowym). Wartości wytrzymałości na rozciąganie złączy spawanych w większości przypadków były wyższe niż wartości tych wielkości w przypadku materiału rodzimego. Badania mikrostruktury i składu chemicznego pozwoliły wyjaśnić zjawiska zachodzące w stopie podczas spawania.
This paper discusses the joining of AZ91 magnesium alloy with AlSi17 aluminium alloy by compound casting. Molten AZ91 was cast at 650oC onto a solid AlSi17 insert placed in a steel mould under normal atmospheric conditions. Before casting, the mould with the insert inside was heated up to about 370oC. The bonding zone forming between the two alloys as a result of diffusion had a multiphase structure and a thickness of about 200 μm. The microstructure and composition of the bonding zone were analysed using optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. The results indicate that the bonding zone adjacent to the AlSi17 alloy was composed of an Al3Mg2 intermetallic phase with not fully consumed primary Si particles, surrounded by a rim of an Mg2Si intermetallic phase and fine Mg2Si particles. The bonding zone near the AZ91 alloy was composed of a eutectic (an Mg17Al12 intermetallic phase and a solid solution of Al and Si in Mg). It was also found that the compound casting process slightly affected the AZ91alloy microstructure; a thin layer adjacent to the bonding zone of the alloy was enriched with aluminium.
Al-enriched layer was formed on a magnesium substrate with use of casting. The magnesium melt was cast into a steel mould with an aluminium insert placed inside. Different conditions of the casting process were applied. The reaction between the molten magnesium and the aluminium piece during casting led to the formation of an Al-enriched surface layer on the magnesium substrate. The thickness of the layer was dependent on the casting conditions. In all fabricated layers the following phases were detected: a solid solution of Mg in Al, Al3Mg2, Mg17Al120 and a solid solution of Mg in Al. When the temperature of the melt and the mould was lower (variant 1 – 670oC and 310oC; variant 2 – 680oC and 310oC, respectively) the unreacted thin layer of aluminium was observed in the outer zone. Applying higher temperatures of the melt (685oC) and the mould (325oC) resulted in deep penetration of aluminium into the magnesium substrate. Areas enriched in aluminium were locally observed. The Al-enriched layers composed mainly of Mg-Al intermetallic phases have hardness from 187-256 HV0.1.
Pomiędzy warstwą a podłożem stwierdzono występowanie cienkiej strefy przejściowej złożonej z roztworu stałego aluminium w magnezie. Mikrotwardość zmodyfikowanej warstwy wierzchniej była ponad dwukrotnie wyższa w porównaniu do mikrotwardości podłoża.

Surface alloying of magnesium surface was conducted by GTAW using AlMg4.5Mn wire as the alloying material. The microstructure of the resulting surface layer comprised dendrites of the solid solution of aluminium in magnesium and a eutectic structure occurring in the interdendritic areas. The eutectic contained an Mg17Al12 intermetallic phase and a solid solution of aluminium in magnesium. At the interface between the layer and the substrate, a thin zone of the solid solution of aluminium in magnesium was observed. The microhardness of the modified surface was more than twice as high as that of the substrate.
Artykuł przedstawia wyniki laserowego, powierzchniowego stopowania magnezu stopem AlSi20. Strefę połączenia warstwy wierzchniej z magnezem stanowi roztwór stały aluminium w magnezie zawierający 5-10 % at. Al.

The hardness of modified surface layer increased to 215-225 HV0,1 as compared to 32 HV0,1 for magnesium. On the basis of X-ray microanalysis a detailed characteristic of microstructure the laser alloyed layer was presented. It was found that the microstructure depends on content of alloying elements Al and Si in the zone of surface layer. The results showed that the dominant (thick) zone of surface layer consisted mainly of phases: Mg2Si, solid solution of magnesium in aluminium and Al3Mg2. In the neighbourhood of magnesium-substrate thin zone containing Mg17Al12 and solid solution aluminium in magnesium was identified. The bonding zone surface layer — magnesium is solid solution aluminium in magnesium containing 5-10 at. % Al.

The work gives an overview on the actual status of the technology development of magnesium alloys. Interest in the magnesium alloys is still growing mainly because they combine good strength and low density. Article contains characteristics of fundamental magnesium alloys and review of main methods of influencing on their properties. First of all, ageing behaviour of magnesium alloys was analyzed. It has been shown, giving an example AZ91 alloy, that the heat treated magnesium alloys exhibit weaker strengthening effect compared to aluminum-base alloys. On the other hand, effect of the grain refining on strengthening in magnesium and magnesium alloys is much higher than that for aluminum alloys and for alloys of other metals. A paper contains a review of the recent works concerning the magnesium matrix composites. In particularly, a method of manufacturing magnesium-intermetallic phases layered macro-composite was presented. It was also shown that there exists possibility of significant modification of the microstructure and properties of the surface layer of magnesium using the laser treatment.

To improve properties of the surface layer of magnesium, laser surface alloying with aluminium was performed. It was shown that the microstructure in the laser alloyed magnesium layer depends on the treatment parameters and the thickness of aluminium layer that was deposited on the magnesium surface before the laser action. In the laser melted zone three areas with respect to microstructure were defined: area containing eutectic composed of Mg17Al12 and solid solution of aluminium in magnesium, single?phase region with Mg17Al12 intermetallic compound and single?phase region of solid solution of aluminium in magnesium. It was also found that the thickness of alloyed layers and its microstructure are not constant on the layer´s length because the absorbtion heat resulted in an increase of the temperature. Hardness of the alloyed surface layer depending on its microstructure was within the range from 50 to 296 HV0.1.

Copper-intermetallic fibrous composites were produced using the powder metallurgy method followed by extrusion. The mixtures of Cu powder with 1 wt.% Ti; 2.5 wt.% Ti and 5 wt.% Ti powder were cold pressed and sintered at a temperature of 850°C. The sintered material was extruded using the KOBO method. During extrusion the hard particles containing copper- -titanium intermetallic phases undergo a plastic deformation assuming a fibrous shape as the processed composite consists of a copper matrix reinforced with fibrous particles of copper-titanium intermetallic phases. Metallographic examinations of the composites revealed uniform distribution of the reinforcing particles in the copper matrix. SEM investigations and X-ray microprobe analysis showed that as a result of sintering intermetallic phases were synthesized at the Cu-Ti interface. The Ti-Cu reaction products were composed of intermetallic phases in the external zone (at the copper-titanium interface) and the core containing a solid solution of copper in titanium. The microhardness of the reinforcing particles was 760 HV0.65. The samples of the composites and sintered unreinforced copper were examined in a compression test, parallel and perpendicular to the extrusion direction. The yield strength value of the composites increases with an increase in the number of reinforcing particles in the copper matrix. Mechanic anisotropy was observed for the Cu-2.5wt.% Ti and Cu-5wt.% Ti composites: the yield strength was higher for the composites loaded parallel to the extrusion direction than for those loaded perpendicular. The yield strength of the Cu-2.5wt.% Ti and Cu-5wt.% Ti copper-intermetallic fibrous composites was several times higher than that of the unreinforced copper.

Do wytworzenia kompozytów włóknistych miedź-fazy międzymetaliczne zastosowano metodę metalurgii proszków a następnie wyciskanie. Próbki obciążone były równolegle i prostopadle do kierunku wyciskania. Zaobserwowano anizotropię własności mechanicznych kompozytów Cu-2.5%Ti i Cu-5%Ti: wartość umownej granicy plastyczności zmierzona równolegle do kierunku wyciskania była wyższa niż w kierunku prostopadłym. Kompozyty włókniste Cu-2.5%Ti i Cu-5%Ti posiadają kilkakrotnie wyższą wartość umownej granicy plastyczności niż spiek miedzi niewzmocniony włóknami zawierającymi fazy miedziowo-tytanowe.
A processing technique has been developed to produce a layered magnesium-intermetallic compound light composite from elemental magnesium and aluminium sheets. Structural examination and measurements of transition layer grown at the magnesium-aluminium interface at high annealing temperature were performed. It was found using Mg/Al diffusion couple that solid state diffusion results in development of Al3Mg2 and Mg17Al12 intermetallic compounds, which are separated into two sublayers. The rate of the layer growth substantially increases with the appearance of the liquid phase at the Mg-Al interface. The microstructure resulted from the partial solidification contains an eutectic composed of Mg17Al12 intermetallic compound and solid solution aluminium in magnesium. The structural processes, which transform the magnesium-aluminium interface, can be applied for fabrication of layered magnesium-eutectic composites. Alternately stacked magnesium and aluminium sheets, formed into a packet, were heated until aluminium was exhausted throughout the course of the Mg-Al reaction with the liquid phase contribution. As a result, the composite containing residual magnesium and layers of eutectic mixture (Mg17Al12 and solid solution of aluminium in magnesium) was obtained. Rapid solidification resulted in fine-grained eutectic microstructure development. Using the presented method, composites with required thickness ratio of magnesium and the eutectic layers can be obtained by choosing appropriate thickness ratio of starting magnesium and aluminium sheets.

Opracowano metodę otrzymywania kompozytu zbudowanego z warstw magnezu i warstw zawierających związek międzymetaliczny, wykorzystując jako substraty blachę magnezu i blachę aluminium. W wyniku powstaje kompozyt składający się z warstw pozostałego magnezu i warstw eutektyki zbudowanej z Mg17Al12 i roztworu stałego aluminium w magnezie. Gwałtowne krzepnięcie pozwala uzyskać eutektykę o drobnoziarnistej mikrostrukturze. Przez dobór stosunku grubości wyjściowych arkuszy blachy magnezu i blachy aluminium można wykonać kompozyty o dowolnym stosunku grubości magnezu do grubości warstw o strukturze eutektyki.

Prezentowana metoda pozwala wykonywać kompozyty o założonym stosunku grubości warstw magnezu do grubości warstw eutektyki poprzez odpowiedni dobór grubości wyjściowych blach magnezu i aluminium. W ten sposób można modelować strukturę i własności mechaniczne kompozytu. Praca zawiera analizę procesu formowania kompozytu w aspekcie projektowania geometrii jego warstw. Analizę tę przeprowadzono w oparciu o dane eksperymentalne. Grubość wyjściowych arkuszy magnezu i aluminium tak dobierano, by uzyskać serię kompozytów o różnym stosunku grubości warstw.

It has been shown that there is a possibility to make layered magnesium-eutectic mixture composite from the elemental magnesium and aluminium sheets. To obtain a composite, magnesium and aluminium sheets are formed alternately into a pocket and then heated at temperature of 445°C. Holding for a few minutes the magnesium-aluminium pocket leads to reaction between the metals in the liquid state. Because front of the reaction zone migrates mainly into the magnesium, more volume of magnesium than aluminium is consumed in the reaction course. Heating is prolonged till the aluminium is exhausted and transformed with part of the magnesium into a liquid phase. During solidification eutectic mixture is formed. As a result composite with layers of residual magnesium stocked between layers of eutectic mixture is produced. The eutectic mixture contains Mg17Al12 intermetallic compound, so these layers of the composite are the reinforcement layers. The thickness of the reinforcement layers depend on the amount of aluminium placed between the magnesium layers. Presented method allow to produce the composites with any thickness ratio of magnesium layers to the eutectic mixture layers by choosing the thickness ratio of starting magnesium and aluminium sheets. In this way structure and mechanical properties of the composite can be modeling. A paper contains analysis of the composite formation in the aspect of the designing geometry of the composite layers. The work was based on the experimental data. The thickness of the initial magnesium and aluminium sheets was selected to produce a series of composites with different thickness ratios between the composite layers. The resulting thickness of the eutectic mixture layers and thickness of the residual magnesium layers were measured using optical microscope. It was found that the layers of composite containing eutectic mixture are four times thicker than the thickness of aluminium sheets used for composite fabrication. Volume contribution of the magnesium in the eutectic mixture synthesized layers of the composite was also determined. On basis of the measurements, the simple relations between the thickness starting magnesium and aluminium sheets and the thickness of the resulting composite layers were formulated.

Structural transformations connected with a new processing technique used for fabrication of the copper-intermetallic phases layered composites from copper and titanium sheets were investigated. Formation and growth of intermetallic phases produced at elevated temperatures at the copper-titanium interface were examined for both polyphase diffusion and for process occurring in the liquid phase presence. Since no exothermic peak has been dedected during differential thermal analysis for the Cu-Ti couple, it is suggested that the process of intermetallic phases synthesis is not of the SHS type. Results of the microscope observations and electron probe microanalysis allowed, on the basis of the Cu-Ti equilibrium diagram, to recognize a row of intermetallic compounds that were synthesised in the layer form at the Cu-Ti interface. The measurements have shown that for intermetallics synthesis with the liquid phase contribution the rate of the layer growth exceeds many times the layer growth rate due to polyphase difussion. It was demonstrated that in the way of high temperature synthesis of intermetallic phases with the liquid phase presence the copper-intermetallic phases layered composite can be processed from copper sheet and titanium foil, stocked alternatively into a packet. As-synthesised composite layers containing intermetallic phases are metallurgically bonded with the copper layers.

Badano przemiany strukturalne związane z nową techniką uzyskiwania z blach miedzi i tytanu kompozytów warstwowych miedź-fazy międzymetaliczne.

In the paper the authors present the results of studies of boiling heat transfer on sintered and galv-ted, porous structures. It was assumed that hydrogen atmosphere sintering of copper powder with an ition of cuprous oxide powder will result in the formation of diffusive pores, which should lead to Irface extension inside the structure and a generation of new nuclcation sites. Sintering of copper powders with different amounts of copper oxide added to them is the basic technology for structure (eneration. Electrolytic deposition is another proposed technology. The paper discusses results of metallographic analysis the effect of prepared covering structural parameters on boiling heat transfer. Significant intensification of boiling heat transfer coefficient (11 x) was obtained for the sintered structure.

Cu matrix composites reinforced with TiC particles or reinforced with particles synthesised from the elemental powder mixture of Cu and Ti were fabricated by sintering and hot pressing. Abrasive wear behaviour of these composites was investigated using T-07 tester and Al2O3 abrasive powder. Comparatively sample prepared from synthesised copper-titanium intermetallic phases and layered composite Cu-intermetallic phases sintered from Cu and Ti foils were tested. It was found that despite of high wear resistance of the hardening phases, addition of the hard particles to copper not improves the wear resistance of the composites. This is due to decohesion of the reinforcing particles from the copper matrix during the test. In fact, the layered Cu-intermetallic phases composite exhibits high increase in the wear resistance in comparison with the pure copper.

The effect of laser surface melting of the AlSi5Cu2 alloy on structure and ageing phenomenon has been studied. Consisting of several phases casting AlSi5Cu2 alloy was surface remelted with CO2 laser at power input of 2.5 kW and scanning velocity of 0.5 m/min through a single laser pass. Due to remelting hardness increases by 20 HV. The solidification microstructure was examined using optical and SEM microscopy and X-ray microanalysis. Laser treatment produces very fine cellular microstructure made of walls containing all the alloying elements. In the solid solution matrix silicon, copper and magnesium were detected. It was also found that copper concentration in the solid solution was greater than that corresponding to equilibrium at room temperature. So, laser melting with subsequent sudden decreasing of the temperature during solidification leads to obtaining supersaturated solid solution. To examine precipitation hardening process, hardness measurements within laser-path versus time of ageing were performed. For natural and artificial ageing, the typical curves were obtained but increase of the hardness was lower in comparison with result of precipitation hardening for the AlSi5Cu2 alloy that was classically heat treated (furnace heating, holding and water quenching).

Magnesium-eutectic mixture (Mg17Al12 and solid solution of aluminium in magnesium) layered composite has been prepared by sintering magnesium and aluminium sheets. Samples of the composite with different thickness ratio of the magnesium layers to the layers containing eutectic mixture were examined in the compression test. Experiment was performed to compare the strain behaviour and strength properties of composites loaded parallel or perpendicular to the layers. According to microscopic observations in both cases crack initiation occurred in the layers of eutectic mixture. Cracks were spreading along or across the layers depending on the load direction. The composites loaded parallel to layers exhibit extremely low plasticity because with cracking of layers containing eutectic mixture, catastrophic fracture of specimen was observed. Composites compressing perpendicular to layers show some plastic flow to failure despite splitting of the eutectic mixture layers. In this case cracks of layers containing eutectic mixture were arrested at the magnesium. With increase of thickness ratio layers containing eutectic mixture to layers of magnesium increases the yield strength of composites. During compression test delamination of the layers of composite was not observed.

Kompozyt magnez-eutektyka (mieszanina faz Mg17Al12 i roztworu stałego aluminium w magnezie) został wykonany poprzez spiekanie arkuszy magnezu i aluminium. Próbki kompozytu o różnym stosunku grubości warstw magnezu do grubości warstw o strukturze eutektyki poddane zostały próbie ściskania. Badania przeprowadzono w celu porównania mechanizmu odkształcenia i własności wytrzymałościowych kompozytów obciążanych równolegle i prostopadle do warstw. Kompozyty ściskane prostopadle do warstw o strukturze eutektyki wykazywały niewielkie odkształcenie plastyczne pomimo pęknięć pojawiających się w warstwach o strukturze eutektyki.

The work was started from study of the structural transformations, that in elevated temperatures, take place at the magnesium-aluminium interface. It was found experimentally that at temperature of 445°C solid state diffusion is followed by liquid phase appearance at the Mg-Al interface. For process passing with the liquid phase contribution thickness d of the reactions products against the time t can be expressed by the equation d=Atn with the time exponent value n>1. This process is very fast compared to solid state polyphase diffusion and can be controlled, therefore may be used for fabrication of layered composite. To obtain a composite, magnesium and aluminium sheets are formed alternately into a pocket and then heated at temperature of 445°C. Heating is prolonged for passing all the aluminium with part of the magnesium sheets into a liquid phase. During solidification liquid phase is transformed into eutectic mixture. So, composite that was formed consists of alternating magnesium and eutectic mixture layers. Using X-ray microprobe analysis and on the basis of Mg-Al binary phase diagram we were found that the eutectic mixture contains two phases: Mg17Al12 intermetallic compound and solid solution of aluminium in magnesium.

The characteristic features of surface cracking observed after laser melting with CO2 and Nd:YAG laser were described. The cracks were always present, their length approaching some part of melted zone and scarcely dependent on laser melting conditions. The appearance of cracks was attributed mainly to martensitic transformation within the surface layer. The possible contribution of developed thermal stresses cannot be also excluded. The existence of cracks may be utilized for the enhancement of bonęe-implant strength.
