Post-slaughter wastes and dead animals cause big risk for the natural environment - the decomposing carcasses and wastes may become a source of microbiological pollution and cause many diseases, also infections. The main direction for the management of the low-risk materials is the production of meat and bone meal. Legal prohibition of using meat and bone meal during livestock feeding resulted in a problem of the management of such animal by-products. This paper describes legal regulations concerning the objectives on the processing and the use or the disposal of the animal by-products, also presents the results of preliminary research on the composting of meat and bone meal.
