In this review studies on the characteristics and syntheses of water-soluble polymers are presented and discussed, which have been accomplished in the Laboratory for Polymers at the Faculty of Chemistry, Jagiellonian University, Cracow - during the past three decades. These polymers are divided into several classes on the basis of functional groups, i.e. high mol. wt. polyoxyethylenes (Mw > 106), cationic and anionic polyelectrolytes with emphasis upon chloro-ionenes, polyaddition products of aliphatic amines to epichlorohydrin or glycidol, poly(acrylic acid), as well as upon water-soluble copolymers synthesized from such monomers like maleic anhydride, vinyl ethers, 2-acrylamido-2-methyl-propylsulfonic acid (AMPS), acrylamide, olefines, vinylformamide, etc.. Derivatizations performed on polymers are discussed aimed at the formation of amphiphilic and amphoteric water-soluble resins. The cooperative phenomena of formation of wholly water-soluble intermacromolecular complexes are considered. Problems of exerting better control over radical polyreactions proceeding in aqueous solutions are also discussed.
