W metodzie czasu przejścia dokonuje się krótkotrwałej iniekcji znacznika, a następnie rejestruje się rozkład stężenia znacznika w dwóch punktach pomiarowych rozmieszczonych w znanej odległości. Z otrzymanych rozkładów stężeń oblicza się czas przejścia medium pomiędzy punktami pomiarowymi, a następnie prędkość strugi. W przypadku, gdy sygnały pochodzące z sond są znacznie zaszumione metody wyznaczania czasów charakterystycznych podane w normie ISO 2975 dają wyniki o małej powtarzalności. Autorzy zaproponowali nową metodę wyznaczania czasów charakterystycznych, która pozwoliła na zwiększenie powtarzalności wyników pomiarów prędkości metodą czasu przejścia.

The tracer method of channel flow measurement depends on the injection of the short lasted tracer to the medium in the channel. The transit time of the tracer is measured when the concentration distri-bution of the tracer in two measurement points placed in the known distance is registered. From the given concentration distribution the transit time between measurement points of the medium can be calculated and then the water velocity. In the case when the signals coming from the probes are "significantly with noise", methods for determination characteristic times given by the standard ISO 2975 give results with little repeatability. Authors proposed a new method for determination of the characteristic times. The signals coming from the tracer detectors are approximated to a model (Fig. 1). In this research three different models are used: a Gaussian-type func-tion and two modifications of Gaussian function. The characteristic times are obtained using approximated model of tracers concentration. The transit time, which is the difference between characteristic times, is used to a water velocity determination. This determination way of the transit time allows increased repeatability of the measurement results of velocity, and the value of the flow rate obtained from the method of transit time.
