The paper presents sedimentary records acquired as part of the research on the coastal cliff located between 221.3 and 221.4 km of the Slovincian (Słowinskie) Coast near Debina. Palynological and subfossil Cladocera analysis of sediments combined with geochemical data proves the existence of varying environmental conditions that occurred depending on the climate fluctuation. The Debina reservoir was formed in the Late Glacial period. Mud and gyttja were deposited in an initially cold proglacial lake. Species of Cladocera identified in this period indicate a deeper oligotrophic reservoir. The end of the Late Glacial cooling inhibited the development of fauna in the reservoir. Climate change at the beginning of the Holocene improved the habitat conditions in the Debina paleolake, which is reflected in the growth of zooplankton biodiversity and enrichment of the aquatic pollen content. We distinguished three phases that illustrate the evolution of the studied aquatic-mire ecosystem. In the following periods, the trophic level in the reservoir increased and significant water-level fluctuations led to periodic transformations of reservoirs into peat bogs. Gradually, the water-level lowering and the intensification of eolian processes led to terrestrialization of the paleolake.

The research was done in the upper course of the Kamienna Creek which is the left-bank tributary of River Słupia situated in the northern part of Poland within Leśny Dwór Forest Inspectorate area. The aim of the study was the comparison of accumulation properties of herbaceous plants in spring niches in relation to macro- and microelements. The shoots of research plant species showed a good supply of macro- and micronutrients. The highest contents of nutrients were found in the shoots of Athyrium filix-femina (Ni), Caltha palustris (Mg, Ca, Sr), Cardamine amara (K, Zn, Fe, Al), Carex rostrata (Mn) and Solanum dulcamara (N, P, Cu), and the lowest in shoots of Ajuga reptans (P, Zn, Mn), Cardamine amara (N, Cu) and Carex rostrata (K, Mg, Ca, Sr, Ni, Fe, Al). Herbaceous plants accumulated from 1767.23 mmol c99%), and microelements ranged from 0.33% in Solanum dulcamara to 0.67% in shoots Cardamine amara. The share of nitrogen was from 38.8% to 56.8% of this amount, phosphorus from 2.9% to 3.9%, potassium from 28.5% to 40.6%, magnesium from 4.8% to 7.6%, and calcium from 4.6% to 16.4%. A large share of iron (from 33.7% Athyrium filix-femina to 39.5% Caltha palustris), manganese (from 9.2% Cardamine amara to 28.8% Carex rostrata) and aluminum (from 16.7% Carex rostrata to 40.8% Cardamine amara) in total measured components indicates excessive downloading them through plants. During the three years of research done in spring niches, it was found that some plant species take up nutrients in the quantities exceeding their physiological demand, which enables to use some of them for forming e.g. artificial wetlands, stopping many impurities and forming protective barriers.

Mineral N fertilizer application may have an effect on soil organic matter and other soil parameters. Therefore, we studied the effects of different doses of N fertilization on soil organic matter and chemical properties of Haplic Luvisol in the locality of Dolná Malanta (Slovakia) during 2014–2016. Soil samples were collected from the plots exposed to the following treatments: 1. N0 – no N fertilization as control during 2014–2016, 2. N40 – N fertilizer at the rate of 40 kg N ha–1 in 2014 and 2016, 3. N80 – N fertilizer at the rate of 80 kg N ha–1 in 2014 and 2016, 4. N160 – N fertilizer at the rate of 160 kg N ha–1 in 2015, and 5. N240 – N fertilizer at the rate of 240 kg N ha–1 in 2015. The results showed that in N80 the soil organic carbon (SOC) content increased by 32% in comparison to N0. The addition of 80 kg ha-1 of N significantly decreased the humic substances (HS) content in the soil by 16% compared to N0. The higher doses of N fertilization 80 rather than 40 kg ha-1 as well as 240 rather than 160 kg ha-1 significantly decreased humus stability. The addition of N fertilization decreased the average values of soil pH. Values of hydrolytic acidity (Ha) increased by 41% and 46% in N40 and N80, respectively than N0, but on the other hand, this one decreased by 36% and 27% in N160 and N240, respectively in comparison to N0. Positive statistically significant correlations were determined between soil pH and SOC in N40 and N80 treatments. The increase of soil pH was connected with higher humus quality in N160 and N240. Negative correlations between humic acids (HA) and sum of basic cations (SBC) and cation exchange capacity (CEC) were observed in N80 < N160 < N240 treatments. Higher values of fulvic acids corresponded with lesser CEC in N80 and N160 treatments. In N160, with increased humus quality, CEC significantly decreased. The same effect was observed in N240. In addition, in N240, we also observed that with increased HA:FA ratio SBC and base saturation significantly decreased.

The aim of the research was to compare the accumulative macro- and microelements in the shoots of Carex acutiformis, Carex echinata, Carex paniculata, Carex remota and Carex rostrata. The content of components in the shoots of the plants was analyzed in relation the chemical composition of the soil. The research was done within the area of four mid-forest spring niches situated in the valley of a tributary of the Słupia River located within the area of Leśny Dwór Forest Inspectorate (Northern Poland). The examined species of Carex, in comparison to other plants in spring niches, were characterized by an average capacity to accumulate both macro- and microelements, which results in little interest in these species when planning artificial buffer zones. Out of the analyzed species, the shoots of C. echinata accumulated the largest quantities of Mg, Zn and Mn, the shoots of C. paniculata –Fe, C. remota – K, Ni, Al and Sr, C. acutiformis – N and P, and the shoots of C. rostrata –Ca and Cu. Similarities between the species of Carex, which resulted from their accumulative properties, were discovered. C. echinata and C. rostrata were characterized by high levels of bioconcentration factors (BF) for Sr, Cu and Ca and low BF for K. C. paniculata and C. remota represented high BF levels for Ni and Mg and low BF levels for Sr, Al, Mn, Cu, Ca, Fe and N. On the other hand, C. acutiformis was characterized by high BF levels for P, K and Mn. In spite of an average accumulative capacity, the examined species of Carex were characterized by highly developed surface and underground zones which had effective impact on the retention of pollutants.

This study aimed to reconstruct environmental changes in the Wkra River Valley near Bielawy Gołuskie (central Poland) based on geochemical, palynological and subfossil Cladocera analysis of deposits filling a palaeo-oxbow lake. Two sediment boreholes collected from the palaeochannel bend (BG-1) and neck (BG-2) include full sequences of organic deposits lying on clastic deposits. The lower part of the BG-1 borehole contains gyttja that accumulated during the Younger Dryas and the Preboreal, which is covered by reed peat of Preboreal and Boreal age. On top of this is alder peat that accumulated during the Atlantic. The ages of the gyttja and peat were confirmed by both radiocarbon dating and palynological analysis. The peats are characterized by a significant content of organic matter, which is relatively stable over time. This indicates a low intensity of mechanical denudation in the catchment, which is supported by low concentrations of aluminum and potassium. Calcium values greatly exceed these elements, suggesting that the lake was mainly fed by groundwater. Variation in trophic conditions over time is indicated by a vertical variability in the content of nitrogen, as well as by the Cladocera population. The strong decomposition of peat in the top layer of the mire, and increased concentrations of phosphorus and heavy metals, testify to increasing human activity during the most recent time periods.

The samples of macrophytes and bottom sediments originated from the littoral zone of the Słupia River were collected in summer 2013. The aim of this study was to compare the properties of the accumulation of leaves and rhizomes of Glyceria maxima, Phragmites australis, Typha latifolia and Phalaris arundinacea for macro- and micronutrients. The largest quantities of macroelements were found in the leaves of the examined species, and microelements dominated the rhizomes of most examined macrophytes except for Mn in P.australis and T.latifolia. The obtained results show that N and K dominated in the leaves of P.arundinacea, P and Mg in the leaves of P.australis, and Ca in the leaves of G.maxima. The largest quantities of N, P and K were cumulated in the rhizomes of P.arundinacea, while Mg and Ca in the rhizome of T.latifolia. The leaves of aquatic plants accumulated from 1354.9 mmolc·kg-1 (T.latifolia) to 1844.0 mmolc·kg-1 (P.arundinacea), and rhizomes from 985.8 mmolc·kg-1 (G.maxima) to 1335.2 mmolc·kg-1 (P.arundinacea) of all the analyzed components. In these species of macrophytes lower accumulated value of the sum of macro- and microelements were found in the rhizomes. The share of nitrogen was 42.4–59.8% of this amount, phosphorus 4.3–8.6%, potassium 22.8–35.1%, calcium from 2,6% to 12.4%, magnesium 3.0–7.5%, and heavy metals were from 0.6% (G.maxima) to 1.2% (T.latifolia) in leaves and from 2.2% (T.latifolia) to 8.7% (G.maxima) in rhizomes.

The studies on Zn, Pb and Mn content in the needles of Pinus silvestris and the surface layers of soil (0.0–0.2 m and 0.4–0.6 m) were conducted in 2010. The research stations covered residential areas, municipal parks, neighborhoods of busy streets, industrial establishments, waste dump sites and sewage treatment plants. The tests showed variability of the analyzed elements in the needles of P.silvestris and in municipal soils, depending on concentration of urban and industrial activity, road traffic and the depth of the examined layer of soil. The content of heavy metals in soil varied. Zn was character-ized by the highest variability, depending on the depth (50.3–52.4%), Mn slightly lower (38.5–42.2%), and Pb, the lowest (29.1–33.2%). It was evidenced that the values of the heavy metals enrichment factors of the needles are closely connected with concentration of the examined metals in the soil. Along with the rise of Zn, Mn and Pb content in the soil, the values of enrichment factors decreased. The strongest negative correlations were found in the case of Zn, both in 1-year old needles (r = -0.82, p<0.05), as well as in 2-years’ old ones (r = -0.83, p<0.05), slightly weaker in the cases of lead and manganese.

The paper presents the results of study on heavy metals in needles of Pinus sylvestris in selected pine forests in Słowiński National Park. It was evidenced that heavy metal contents (Zn, Cu, Mn and Fe) in needles of Pinus sylvestris varied depending on the metal, the age of the needles and the humidity of a forest complex. Variation coeffi cients of such metals remained at the level of: 13–30% (Zn), 3–6% (Cu), 13–34% (Mn) and 12–30% (Fe) depending on the age of the needles. In the case of Zn, Mn and Fe higher concentrations of researched metal were found in the 2-year-old needles than in 1 year old needles, and in the case of Cu in 1 year old needles than in 2-year-old needles. The increase of zinc concentration found in 1-year-old needles after rainfall sums was (Bw, r = 0.67, p < 0.05, n = 24) and (Bśw, r = 0.39, p < 0.05, n = 24) in 2-year-old needles. The content of the above mentioned metals in needles of dry coniferous forests (Bs), fresh coniferous forests (Bśw) and humid coniferous forests (Bw) of the ground cover constitute the following decreasing series: Mn(323.8) > Fe(103.4) > Zn(65.5) > Cu(5.9).

W przypadku Zn, Mn i Fe stwierdzono większe stężenia badanego metalu w igliwiu 2-letnim, niż 1-rocznym, a w przypadku Cu w igliwiu 1-rocznym niż 2-letnim. Zawartości powyższych metali w igliwiu boru suchego (Bs), boru świeżego (Bśw) i boru wilgotnego (Bw) tworzą następujący szereg malejący: Mn(323,8) > Fe(103,4) > Zn(65,5) > Cu(5,9).

Celem badań była analiza przestrzennego zróżnicowania procesów i czynników glebotwórczych oraz właściwości pokrywy glebowej głęboko wciętej dolinki erozyjno-denudacyjnej Wieprzy w okolicach Mazowa (Równina Sławieńska, Polska północna). Badania wykazały, że mimo niewielkich rozmiarów dolinki erozyjno-denudacyjnej, w jej obrębie występuje duża różnorodność czynników i procesów glebotwórczych. Gleby dolinki zaklasyfikowano do czterech typów (brunatne kwaśne, deluwialne brunatne, deluwialne próchniczne, torfiasto-glejowe). Wrozwoju gleb, w skali całej dolinki, podstawową rolę odgrywa rzeźba terenu, a procesy glebotwórcze pozostają w ścisłym związku z jej morfogenezą.

The aim of research was an analysis of spatial differentiation of soil-forming processes and factors, as well as of soil properties, in a deeply incised erosional-denudational valley of Wieprza near Mazów, northern Poland. Despite small size of the valley, there exists considerable variability of soil-forming factors and processes within its limits, hence soil systematic position, morphology, and physico-chemical properties vary across the valley. Soils in the valley belong to four types: acid brown soils (cambisols), deluvial brown soils, humic deluvial soils and peaty-gley soils. Three main landscape elements can be distinguished within the study area: upper surfaces, valley sides, and valley floor. Each zone is typified by its own complex of soil-forming factors. In the upper slope/plateau area soil properties reflect the characteristics of parent rock. Loamy deposits of former ice-dammed lakes support acid brown soils of low pH, high content of organic matter in the humic horizon, and completely depleted in carbonates. Slopes below are subject to erosion, hence the thickness of humic horizon and organic matter content are reduced in respect to soils present on the plateau. In slope concavities one can observe deposition of material brought down by slope wash and the build-up of deluvial soils. These soils show the development of cambic horizon, which typically contains large quantities of organic matter. In the valley floor mud deposition and the development of humic deluvial soils takes place. The latter are enriched in organic matter, nutrients, favourable C/N and C/P ratio, and have higher pH if compared with soils on the slopes and on the plateau. Their evolution remains under significant influence of water seeping from the truncated water-bearing horizons and, seasonally, water issued from drains. The surplus of water is conducive for peaty-gleyey soil development. At the entire valley scale, local relief is a key factor influencing soil evolution, whereas soil-forming processes remain in close correspondence with morphogenesis of the valley.

Przedmiotem badań autorów jest pięć małych zlewni niewielkich, lewobrzeżnych dopływów dolnej Wieprzy odwadniających fragment niemal płaskiej wysoczyzny morenowej zbudowanej z glin i utworów zastoiskowych. Wyliczono tempo denudacji odpływowej w badanych zlewniach i porównano je z ustaleniami innych autorów odnoszącymi się do innych małych zlewni nizinnych

Denudation, according to the most commonly accepted definition, encompasses all surface processes leading to gradual lowering and planation of the Earth surface. In the narrow sense, the process is relevant to sloping surfaces and involves mainly downslope transport ofregolith. As such, it is contrasted with erosion, understood as destructive role ofwater flowing in concentrated way, as rivers and streams. The bulk of material carried outside the drainage basin (an area drained by one ofmore streams) is transported through drag or rolling over the bed, in suspension or in solution (real or colloidal). Quantitative estimation ofeach mode oftransport provides an opportunity to establish the rate ofcatchment denudation. This parameter is named runoff denudation and expressed in mass or volume units. Research focused on runoff denudation in the Wieprza valley has been carried out since the beginning of 2006. Nowadays, measurements are carried out within five left-hand tributaries of the lower Wieprza in the vicinity of Stary Kraków and Mazowsze (phot. 1). The analyzed drainage basins differ in terms of area, relief and land use. The basins of Jarosławianka (creek no. 5, phot. 1) and Struga Leśna (creek no. 3, phot. 1) are the largest. Process measurements focus on surface waters, groundwater outflows, and drains. On a monthly basis discharges are measured and samples for analysis collected. In the case of rare meteorological events the frequency of measurement increases. The existing data indicate that denudation rate in the entire Wieprza catchment and in the controlled five small drainage basins is low and comparable with rates established for other rivers of Przymorze (sub-Baltic) region (Cyberski 1984, Florek 1991), and for small catchments within the limits of the last glaciation (Kostrzewski, Zwoliński 1988a, b, Smolska 1996). It needs emphasizing that denudation rates in the investigated small catchments are lower, or considerably lower, than those established for the drainage basin ofWieprza, despite high gradients ofthe smaller streams and their deeply incised valleys. This means that the upper catchment ofWieprza is an area ofenhanced geomorphic activity. This finding corresponds with the results obtained for the Parsęta river by Kostrzewski and Zwoliński (1988a, b) and Zwoliński (1989)
