Temperature excursions in activated carbon adsorbers are mainly caused by deviations from plug flow, e.g. as a result of compressed zones with reduced flue gas flow. To predict such phenomena a transient, two-dimensional dispersion model has been developed, which takes into account variations in the velocity field by completion of convective terms. Basic knowledge about origin and spread of temperature excursions could be derived. For example it was shown that temperature excursions in compressed zones could lead to secondary perturbations in the remaining area of the adsorbed bed.
