This paper describes the creation of a 3D computerised anatomical atlas of the chest based on data for the Visible Human project at the National Library of Medicine. A pixelwise box classifier was used to segment different organs in the chest colour and CT images of the male cadaver and the chest atlas containing surface descriptions of the segmented organs was created. The structures in the atlas can be visualised using fast surface rendering. The atlas can also be deformed to fit the anatomy another invidual. This is illustrated by an application example where the atlas is matched to MRI data from a healthy volunteer.
