This paper deals with description of operation behaviour of various friction materials of brake blocks (cast iron and composite) of railway brakes with regard to braked wheels. Rim of the wheel is exposed to thermal loading during the braking process. The thermal loading depends on material of used brake blocks. The mechanical and thermal loading of the wheels results in various stress in its rim and disc. Consequence of this is deformation of wheel shape. Using of various brake materials exert influence mentioned phenomena and on the wear and possible damage of the wheel rim as well. It is caused by various properties of various brake blocks materials (heat conductivity and frictional properties). The paper is devoted to comparison of influence of using various brake blocks materials on operational properties of railway wheels and its mechanical and thermal loading and shape deformations.

This contribution compares the composite organic brake blocks of type K with cast iron brake block, which is currently used most often. In the article is processed analyze of friction materials used for railway brakes. There are also processed the materials microscopic analysis of individual types of brake blocks using the light microscopy as well as their friction characteristics during braking on the brake test bench UIC and comparison of individual results.
