Overview of fault location techniques for HV (EHV) transmission lines as well as for distribution networks is presented. Distinctive features of fault location algorithms for both applications are discussed. One-end and two-end fault location for traditional uncompensated transmission lines is considered first. The presented two-end fault location is based on unsynchronised measurements at the line terminals. Then the technique with phase co-ordinates approach is utilised for locating faults in series-compensated networks. A single line and parallel lines with series capacitor compensation are considered. Problems encountered in fault location in distribution networks are discussed and the solutions are indicated. Results of large ATP-EMTP testing and evaluation of accuracy of the fault location algorithms are reported and discussed.
