A new polar stationary phase for thin-layer chromatography has been prepared by reaction of gamma-aminopropyltrimethoxysilane with volcanic tuff from Mârşid (Romania). The surface characteristics of the tuff before and after chemical modification were determined by elemental analysis, measurement of specific surface area, IR spectroscopy, thermoanalysis and TLC. Four biologically important saccharides (raffinose, maltose, sac-charose and glucose) were separated by TLC on gamma-aminopropylsilylbonded tuff.
