The paper gives some final results of the subproject "Three Dddimensional Plate Kinematics in Romania" of the CRC 461 "Strong Earthquakes", funded by the German Research Foundation at the Universitat Karlsruhe in the year 1996 to 2007. The reprocessing of the data of 14 GPS campaigns performed from 1995 to 2006 in the deformation network, covering the middle and eastern part of Romania, using the Bernese Software (version 5.0) is discussed, including the analysis of multipath effects and antenna calibrations. From the daily coordinate solutions astation velocities were derived using the kinematic model of deformation analysis. Based on these station velocities a three dimensinal velocity field was estimated using the technique of multilevel B-spline approximation, followed by the calculation of strain components. Especially the results of the height derormations could help to support the geophysical modelling of the Vrancea earthquakes.

After four years of work within the framework of the Collaborative Research Center (CRC)461 "Strong Earthquakes: A Challenge for Geosciences and Civil Engineering", funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (German Research Foundation), this paper presents some results from the geodetic subproject B1 called "Threedimensional Platekinematics in Romania". This project was installed to detect borders of the geotectonic plates in Romania, to quantify the moving rates and to determine the deformations of each geotectonic unit. These aims will be accomplished by reapeated GPS-measurements in a network which has been installed in 1997 and expanded in 1999. The present network consists of 35 stations covering an area of 300 x 380 km with theVrancea region in its centre. The geodetic frame is given by six stations of the CEGRN (Central European GPS Geodynamic Refererence Network) of the CEI-Initiative CERGOP and the new ITRF permanent station in Bukarest. Three GPS campaigns were carried out in summer 1997, 1998 and 2000. The main focus of this paper is to present the achieved results and accuracies of the GPS-campaigns, to expose strategies for different ways of deformation analyses with their pros and contras and to give first impressions of deformations in the Vrancea region.

The Central European Regional Geodynamic Project (CERGOP) was established to integrate geodynamic research in the Central European Region including 11 countries and using space geodetic techniques - mainly GPS. The geodetic network established-CEGRN (Central European GPS Geodynamic Reference Network) provides a stable and reliable reference frame. CEGRN actually represents a powerful tool in order to perform regional and subregional geotectonic investigations, too. In the CERGOP frame 4 main and 4 additional GPS stations were established in Romania. The GPS sites are selected to represent specific tectonic units. GPS observations were carried out at all 8 stations during the 1995, 1996 and 1997 CEGRN campaigns. This paper intends to present the first results from the BKG processing center with regard to plate kinematics in Romania based on the GPS observations 1995, 1996 and 1998. Plans for long-term observations and network densification are discussed.
