Content available remote Review of empirical models of photographic recording of image information.
EN
In this paper, elementary problems of empirical photographic models of image information recording are discussed against the background of which a concept of our own model is presented which was used in the theoretical examinations of the influence of edge effects on acutance. The results obtained partially fill in the gap in this region of photographic structurometry and provide a starting point for further simulation model examinations and verification of the theoretical results by comparing them with the results obtained in laboratory investigations.

In the paper, the results of simulation model examination of the influence of edge effects connected with both inhibiting and accelerating the photographic development process on the sharpness of images recorded on light-sensitive silver halide materials are presented. In the examination a three-stage model of the photographic recording of image information was used, which was been worked out by the Imaging Science Group of the Wroclaw University of Technology. The functioning of this model was compared to that of the well known Nelson's model.

Content available remote Influence of the rate of photographic development process on the edge effects.
EN
In the paper, the results of simulation examinations of the dependence of both intensity and direction of edge effects on the rate of the photographic development process are presented. In the examination a model of the development process was applied taking account of the kinetic equation of the chemical reaction as well as the diffusion equation. Four most important cases occurring during selective reduction of the silver ions taking place in the development process have been analyzed.

Content available remote Modelling of edge effects taking account diffusion phenomenon
EN
The results of simulation model examination of the occurrence intensity of edge effects show that they are dependent on time, reaction rate constant, substrate and product concentration, layer thickness and exposure intensity. For this purpose, a model development process was applied, taking account of the kinetic reaction equation as well as the diffusion equation. The results obtained are represented in the form of three-dimensional plots where the intensity of edge effect occurrence is shown as a function of two variables.

The results of theoretical examinations of the dependence of edge effects on the optical density, which influence directly the contour sharpness in the image, are presented. Besides, the results of calculations of the influence of contrast in the characteristic curve of the radiation sensitive layer on the shape and properties of the limiting curve are shown. The results obtained are presented in the form of functions of changes in the relative edge enhancement indicator and maximum gradient of the limiting curve as dependent on the level and difference of the optical density in the image and background, respectively.

In this paper the results of theoretical examinations of the influence of acutating dyes contained in light-sensitive layers on the modulation transfer function and the image sharpness are presented. A significant increase of the photographic image quality was confirmed which resulted from diminishing the harmful influence of the scattered radiation. The results obtained have been presented in the form of changes in both the modulation transfer function and the values of state indicators of image sharpness as dependent on the acutating dye concentration in the light sensitive layers

Adjacency effects are one of the most important factors affecting the sharpness of photographic materials. A mathematical model that makes use of the light spread function of the lens and film combination and the chemical spread function related to the lateral diffusion of development inhibiting reaction products is proposed. Parameters used in the model are determined experimentally. A comparison between theoretical and experimental results is given in this paper.

The most important questions related to the origin of adjacency effects and their influence on the photographic image quality are described. The presented method of computer modelling of these effects allows the prediction of influence on the shape and properties of the edge curve in silver halide light-sensitive materials. The results indicate that in the case of retardation of development the existing criteria of acutance of the photographic image should be modified.
