In the moment of getting independence, the Slovak Republic recognized security as one of its most important aims of its policy. Until 2004, Slovakia pursued its own policy aimed at integrating with Euro-Atlantic security structures. Having reached that goal, it had to conform to NATO and EU standards, including creating security legislation. One of the most important documents was Defence Strategy of the Slovak Republic, the current version of it dates from 2005. It consists of five parts: the Slovak Republic in the changing security environment, new dimension of defence policy, the Slovak Republic’s defence requirements, armed forces’ development, and defence support. The content is supplemented with the introduction and conclusions with additional information. The first part of the Slovak Republic’s Defence Strategy underlines that Slovakia’s security interests result from the needs of its citizens and the country and are based on the values of freedom, peace, law, democracy, development and compliance with basic human rights. It states that the character of Slovak security interests is timeless despite a dynamically changing security environment. The second part defines the main task of Slovakia’s defence policy, stresses the significance of NATO and EU membership and cooperation with the UN and OSCE and lays defence policy principles. The third part defines the mission of the Slovak Republic’s defence, the range of Slovakia’s defence capabilities and NATO collective defence. It outlines the Ministry’s of Defence tasks as a coordinator of all activities connected with the armed forces’ reconstruction and creates conditions of the armed forces’ participation in operations, conducted in a complex and flourishing way. The fourth part describes the programme of armed forces’ development and reform, as well as the scope of their activity, including strategic tasks, tasks resulting from international agreements and tasks to support public administration bodies. The fifth part deals with problems of supporting the defence system of the country in order to provide planning, preparation and assigning appropriate forces and assets to perform armed forces’ tasks in defence and to pursue other tasks.
