Minimization of empty truck runs. Formulation of problem

The article formulates the issue of minimizing empty runs. Then, the interpretation of the issue of empty runs on numerical examples is presented. The formulation of the issue of minimizing empty runs requires the formulation of two optimization problems. The first one concerns distribution of commodities with minimal cost. The optimization problem formulated in this way is a well-known transport problem with the objective function being the costs of transport. The second one concerns commodity transport with distance minimization. After solving these two issues, the circulation problem of transport means is solved. Thanks to which we obtain the minimum number of empty runs expressed in distance units.

W artykule przedstawiono współczesny pogląd na teorię systemów transportowych. Wykazano, że teoria systemów transportowych, jak każda inna teoria, nie zajmuje się bezpośrednio badaniem zjawisk fizycznych, lecz badaniem modeli tych zjawisk. Model systemów transportowych jest odwzorowaniem rzeczywistości transportowej lub jej fragmentu. Oznacza to, że model powinniśmy traktować jako uproszczoną - umyślnie i celowo - reprezentację rzeczywistości, jej podstawowych cech, istotnych ze względu na zamierzony cel badań. W artykule specyfikuje się podstawowe cechy, które powinny być w modelu systemów transportowych odwzorowane. Wyrażono pogląd, że nauczanie na Wydziale Transportu PW podporządkowane jest idei budowania modeli.

In the article a modern view on the theory of transport systems is presented. The theory of transport systems, like any other theory, is demonstrated not deal directly with investigating physical phenomena but rather to be concerned with studying models of these phenomena. A model of a transport system is the reflection of transport reality or its fragment. It means that we should treat the model as a simplified - both purpsely and deliberately- representation of reality and its basic features - essential because of the intended objestive of the research. The basic features, which should be indicated in a model of a transport system are defined in the article. The opinion is expressed that teaching in the Department of Transport in the Warsaw Technological University is geared to the concept of model design.
