A special place among the brick Russian Orthodox churches in sixteenth-century Volhynia is occupied by basilicas. Those greates sacral realiations of the region under examination disclose various architectonic solutions the fullest. Both their founders and builders enjoyed greater opportunities for shaping the interiors than in the case of single-nave churches. The origin of the Bohoyavlenska church in Ostrog is placed by the Polish scholar Władysław yavlenska church in Ostrog is placed by the Polish scholar in 1885-1891) at the turn of the fifteenth century by referring to analogy with workshops involved in rebuilding the Royal Castle on Wawel Hill in Cracow and to the extant inscription: Initium huic operis Anno Domini 1521. Russian researches suggest an earlier date, and regard 1521 as the year of the rebuilding. Far-reaching rebuilding, conducted during the nineteenth century, and the demolition of the object render unambiguous dating impossible. The analysis concerns also the castle defensive wall adjoining the church. The plan of the building in question, covered by five domes, is based on a square. The author discerns certain analogies in Russian Orthodox churches in Międzyrzecz near Ostrog, analog Włodzimierz Wołyński, Czernihów and Halicz. The first Gothic hall in Ukraine is the cathedral church in Lvov from the second half of the fourteenth century - a source of inspiration for numerous objects in this region. The second described building is the distinctly hall-type church of St. Nicholas in Mielce, whose origin is placed in 1542. The Uspenska church in Zimno brings to mind analogies with Mazovian churches in Putusk, Brochów, n Chrulin, Ciekszyn and Brok, connected with Giovanni Baptista of Venice, although the Zimno basilica did not exert a greater impact on the architecture of the region. Its foundation is associated with the Falczewski family, who came from the voivodeship of Kalisz. During the sixteenth century, the Falczewskis moved to Volhynia, where members of the family held hihg offices in the Church hierrarchy; hence, stylistic and workshop links between the church in Zimno and the cathedral in nd workshop links between the church of the Holly Trinity in Starokonstantynov was built in about 1561 upon the basis of a privilege issued by Zygmnt August, King of Poland, for the Ostrogski family in return for founding the town. Its form demonstrates numerous analogies to the Bohoyavlenska church in Ostrog. The last of the discussed churches, the Spaso-Preobtrazhenska in Czetwertnia, was erected in 1604 as a bequest of Duchess Anna Zbaraska nee Czetwertyäska, and stands over her grave. In the summary, the author compares the functions of the interiors of Roman Catholic, Reformed and Russian Orthodox churches.
