Polichlorowane bifenyle (PCB) należą do związków chemicznych wytwarzanych w ubiegłych latach w dużych ilościach, mających szereg zastosowań w wielu gałęziach przemysłu, w tym także na statkach i okrętach morskich. Ponieważ należą one do grupy związków mających stwierdzony szkodliwy wpływ na zdrowie organizmów wyższych, ich produkcja została zakazana. Związki te jednak stale przenikają do środowiska naturalnego, np. wskutek złomowania statków i okrętów, awarii urządzeń elektrycznych, wycieków oraz powstawania składowisk, co nadal stwarza szereg zagrożeń. Środowisko morskie, a co za tym idzie - organizmy w nim żyjące (np. ryby, ssaki), jako ostateczny zbiornik większości zanieczyszczeń, jest szczególnie narażone na skażenia związkami chlorowcopochodnymi, a więc także PCB.

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB) belong to organic compounds produced in previous years in a great deal in the all world. They were used in many industrial interests, inclusive shipping. PCBs are toxic compounds, therefore their production and using are now forbidden, but their penetration into environment, e.g. due to damages or conscious pollution, creates many problems. Marine environment plays the essential role in dissemination of PCBs, and so food originating from this environment contains them, what makes a serious threat to human health and life.

Eleven PCB congeners were determined in phytoplankton samples collected from the Odra Estuary at 9 stations in 2001-2002. The PCB concentrations were related to the temperature, turbidity, salinity, oxygen and redox potential of the water as well as to the pigment content in the samples. The results indicate that phytoplankton and the detritus derived from it play a crucial role in the distribution of PCBs, their transfer from the water column to sediments and from the Estuary to the sea. The species composition of the phytoplankton occurring in this area could also be very important as regards the sorption of PCBs.
