W opracowaniu przedstawiono zagadnienie zróżnicowania pola wilgotności powietrza w Toruniu w 2012 roku. Do tego celu wykorzystano wyniki pomiarów z 5 punktów usytuowanych w różnych częściach miasta. Wilgotność powietrza została przedstawiona poprzez dwie jej charakterystyki: wilgotność względną (%) i ciśnienie pary wodnej (hPa).

In this article the problem of spatial diversity of the air humidity field in Toruń in 2012 is addressed. For this purpose, results of measurements taken at 5 sites located in different parts of the city were used. The air humidity is presented through its relative humidity (%) and the water vapour pressure (hPa). The obtained results indicate a substantial diversity of air humidity in the city, whether represented as mean annual, monthly or diurnal values. In the case of the relative humidity, the lowest mean value was observed in the city centre, at LO1 (75%), whereas the highest value was recorded in a wood at the LBI (82%) site, located in the east of the city. As far as the water vapour pressure is concerned, the highest annual mean values occurred in the city centre (LO1) and the woodland area (LBI) – 9.8 hPa each, whereas the lowest readings were observed at WRZ in the north of the city (9.4 hPa). The influence of the synoptic situations on the diversity of air humidity in the city was also analysed. Both the relative humidity and the water vapour pressure were found to be slightly more diversified within the city when anticyclonic pressure systems prevailed, as compared to cyclonic systems. Only in the summer, between LO1 (city centre) and LBI (woodland in the east), did the correlation reverse. The diversity of air humidity is affected by meteorological elements. The problem was studied on the basis of the observations made at the LO1 and WRZ sites. A statistically significant correlation was found in the values of the difference in relative humidity and wind speed in all seasons of the year. In the case of cloudiness, its amount is significantly correlated with the differences in the water vapour pressure, but no correlation was found of this element with the relative humidity.
He was a very promising researcher1 at the Institute of Geography of Nicolaus Copernicus University (NCU) in Toruń, with diverse research interests focussing particularly on remote sensing and its practical applications. He passed away aged 45, at the threshold of his research and organisational career, in the most creative period in life, and with advanced work on his postdoctoral dissertation. This happened during a scientifi c expedition to Iceland, whose main research theme was the monitoring of changes of Iceland’s natural surface using ERS–1 and ERS–2 satellite images and other remote sensing systems.
A sozological map is one of the thematic maps and presents the state of the natural environment, as well as causes and effects of both negative and positive transformations occurring in the environment under the influence of miscellaneous processes, including human activity, as well as methods applied in the protection of natural values of this environment. An official sozological map is prepared in the scale of 1:50,000 on a basemap of an available topographic map. The content of an official sozological map consists of a few groups of elements, and the works are carried out in two stages – field mapping and the subsequent editorial preparation. Field mapping is the main stage in the collection of updated thematic data. In 2009, within the scope of an environmental science camp, sozological mapping was done at the scale of 1:10,000 by the Student Scientific Association of Geographers from the Institute of Geography, NCU, and during the subsequent eight months – a digital sozological map of the Gopło Millennium Park (GMP) was prepared. The situational background for that study was a large-scale topographic map at the scale of 1:10,000 with updated situational content from the mid-1980s. GPS receivers were used during the detailed field exploration, and for the revision of situational data and selected elements of the thematic content, digital, panchromatic orthophotomaps from 2004 were used together with their field revision. The research objective was to determine the usefulness of remote-sensing materials in the revision of selected elements of the sozological map’s content together with the collection of updated situational and thematic data. Based on the remotesensing data, the situational content of the map was updated within the scope of important elements of the land cover and land development, together with their course and borders, the road network and industrial lines; certain selected elements of the degradation of the land surface, surface waters and atmospheric air were interpreted and verified. As a result of this study, a digital sozological map was created in the scale of 1:10,000, which was handed over to the GMP Management in the town of Kruszwica.
This paper presents the outline, methodology, and the state of the realization of a research project. Its goal is to study the influence of environmental, dynamic, and anthropogenic factors on meteorological and biometeorological conditions. It is also planned to work out a map of Toruń topoclimates. The research was performed for over a year on the basis of a network of 26 measurement points selected in different places in Toruń and its neighbourhood with automatic registration of basic meteorological elements and thermal imageries from Terra ASTER satellite. The environment geographic information system created in ArcGIS is used for interpolation of individual meteorological elements and for distribution of biometeorological indices. Various spatial data were used such as land cover, land use, localization and height of buildings, digital elevation model (DEM), and present-day colour orthophotomap. Project results relating to the variability of Toruń bioclimatic conditions may be used for organization of tourism and recreation, and the created map of topoclimates for spatial planning and further development of the city.

Uzyskane w projekcie wyniki dotyczące zmienności warunków bioklimatycznych Torunia będą mogły być wykorzystane w organizacji turystyki i rekreacji, a utworzona mapa topoklimatów w planowaniu przestrzennym i dalszym rozwoju miasta.
Całość wykonano w technologii GIS z wykorzystaniem oprogramowania ESRI.

Geographic Information Systems were classified as one of the most important technological" inventions" of the 20th century for geography. GIS, as the content of lectures, and later on as an academic subject, was introduced at Polish universities and colleges relatively late - only at the beginning of the 1990s. At first, it was an extension of the content scope discussed within the framework of cartography and topography, and only later - as independent lectures and practical classes. The International GIS Day is an excellent supplement to the content of lectures and practical workshops, as well as an indication of proper students' attitudes towards geoinformation. It has been organized every year in November for more than 10 years, in Poland and worldwide. The objective of this event is to popularize the knowledge about geoinformation systems and their broad applications. The first celebration of this day took place on 18th of November 1999 in several countries at the same time, and the proposed theme -" application of GIS is limited only by the imagination of people who use it" - remains valid until now. Since the first shows, one can observe an increasing number of countries and academic, institutional and commercial centres introducing the modern geography to all who are interested in it through such an open and interesting form. The research is aimed at analysing previous celebrations of the GIS Day in Poland (2000-2010), as well as making an attempt to determine the significance of this form of sharing the knowledge and skills in geographic education.

Spatial distribution of heathlands in Pomerania (the north-western part of Poland) was described based on the results of questionnaires sent out to the registered offices of all forest divisions (96), national (4) and landscape (15) parks in this area. According to the inventory, heathlands occur in 28 forest divisions and 3 national and landscape parks. The frequency of occurrence and the area covered by heathlands were determined. All the data were compiled in the form of a spatial database with the use of Geographic Information Systems. The paper also contains the geographical distribution of heath habitats in the area of Pomerania according to particular syntaxa. Additionally, the content of the database CORINE Land Cover was analysed at the third level for the area of Pomerania, completed for the years 2000 and 2006. The area and the number of patches were described according to three land cover categories: heaths (code 322), conflagration sites (code 334) and peat bogs (code 412). The obtained results increase our knowledge about heaths in Pomerania. Moreover, results of territorial listing of heathlands in the city of Toruń were obtained. This is a rare situation when this category of land cover occurs in the area administratively belonging to urban territory. At present, this interesting plant formation is rather disappearing as a result of economic activity of man, especially because new areas are developed to build houses.

W ramach projektu opracowano metodę wybuchowego wytwarzania aerozolu wodnego wraz z określeniem trajektorii lotu i precyzyjnym dostarczaniem kapsuły wodnej na miejsce pożaru.

The paper presents the structure of the system which makes possible to automatically release a water capsule from the helicopter and to detonate water contained inside the capsule at the defined height over the target (the place of fire) in order to cover the land of a adequate area with the produced aerosol. The key role in this system is provided by the GPS precision receiver whose signal is analysed by the board computer. This device defines the direction of flight and the flight over the fire area, the moment the water capsule is released and detonated over defined place and on defined height. These parameters are calculated on the basis of the current flight velocity and the position of the water capsule. These parameters are defined on the basis of current flight velocity of and the position of water capsule. Experiments were carried out in 2008-2009 using two geodetic GPS receivers as well as ASG-EUPOS system. Flights approached from different directions observing the quality and persistence of the satellite signal and taking advantage of modifications from the base station using radiomodems with different powers. The gained results of the precise delivery of a water capsule to the fire area were discussed, especially the directions and the angle of attack of the helicopter to the place of delivery and the quality of the GPS satellite signal observed at the same time. This method can be applied in the remote deactivation of contaminated areas and in devastation of selected objects or territories.
Knowledge of a land cover is very essential to understand and know relations between a man and an environment. The land cover is closely related to the rest elements of geographic environment. It also illustrates the variety of the structure of geographic environment. Till the end of the last century, there were no data representing full, reliable and covering the whole country information about the land cover. Maps and studies over this element of landscape were based on other methods of mappings, various scales and spatial ranges. This fact made it impossible to make comparison analysis and to have proper conclusions concerning processes that were taking place. The realization of National Geographic Information Systems (NSIG) and works connected with the creation of CORINE Land Cover (CLC) is a big help in this field. It was impossible without the development of spatial imagery, universality of the application of spatial information systems, and the use of army materials in the civilian, formal cases. Source spatial data used on the paper, mutually supplement and cover one another. Research connected with the analysis of a landscape structure was done in the chosen protected areas in Kujawsko-Pomorskie Voivodeship. All (8) landscape parks were in the Voivodeship. Total area of the preserved territories is almost 12% of the total Voivodeship area, and represent various types of a natural landscape. The structure of the landscape in landscape parks was analyzed with the application of landscape indices. The following indices describing the structure of landscape were calculated and compared: a number of land cover classes, a number of patches, total length of the edge, a shape index, a fractal dimension, and Shannon’s diversity index. Comparisons of indices among parks were done in relation to various scales of source materials.
Obliczono i porównano następujące wskaźniki opisujące strukturą krajobrazu: liczbę klas pokrycia, liczbę płatów, łączną długość krawędzi, indeks kształtu, wymiar fraktalny oraz wskaźnik różnorodności Shannon’a. Porównań wskaźników między parkami dokonano w odniesieniu do różnych materiałów źródłowych.

Knowledge of land cover is essential for understanding and exploration of relations between Man and the environment. The land cover is closely related to the remaining elements of the geographical environment. It also illustrates the structural diversity of the geographic environment. Until the end of the last century, there had been no data representing full and reliable information about the land cover for the whole country. Maps and research on land cover as an element of the landscape were based on different mapping methods, various scales, and spatial ranges. Because of that, it was impossible to analytically compare and conclude on processes that were taking place. The implementation of the National Geographic Information Systems and activities related to the development of the CORINE Land Cover is a big step forward. It was aided by developing spatial imagery, by the universality of application of spatial information systems, and by the use of army data in civilian, formal cases. Source spatial data used in the paper complement each other and overlap. The research involving the analysis of a landscape structure was conducted in some protected areas (national and landscape parks) in Pomerania. The landscape structure in landscape parks was analyzed with landscape indices. The following indices describing the structure of landscape were calculated and compared: number of land cover classes; number of patches; circumference; shape index; fractal dimension; and Shannon’s diversity index. The indices were compared between the parks in relation to various scales of source materials.
The landscape structure can be analysed in different ways while using different methods, research tools and initial data. One of the effective research methods is remote sensing together with satellite imageries obtained by this method. This technology used to be successfully applied in ecology, e.g. for evaluation of forest landscape structure modifi ed by economic activity of man. In the studies carried out by remote sensing methods, it was found that the current landscape structure results from its previous states and is shaped both by man and by natural processes. Having the above statements as a starting point, an analysis of forest landscape structure was performed in the territory of the Zaborski Landscape Park, based on Landsat satellite imageries from the period 1975-2003. The NDVI was calculated for the entire park as well as for three research plots situated within the park. Squares were set up as research plots, with a side of 5040 m long. Each square encompassed 28 224 pixels of dimensions 30 x 30 m. The squares were set up in areas of different intensity of forestry and different share of secondary forests on formerly arable soils. On the basis of generated images presenting the spatial diversifi cation of NDVI, the following texture parameters were defi ned for each research plot: diversity (H), fragmentation (F), fractal dimension (FD). In calculations of the diversity index and fragmentation, the size of the matrix window amounted to 5x5 pixels. The fractal dimension was calculated with the triangular prism method described by Altobelli et al. (2001). The NDVI was also calculated for three sets, each comprising 24 or 25 test areas distributed within each research plot. Test areas were squares with a side of 300x300 metre long representing all age classes of tree stands in the habitat of fresh and dry pine forest. The completed database on subdivisions of the surface area division as well as the course of the process of deforestation and afforestation of the region during the period 1796-2003, allowed the detailed analysis of the obtained results with reference to land use history in this area. In the comparative analysis of three research plots on the basis of structure indices, the graphic method of Jentys-Szaferowa (1948) was applied and methods of numerical taxonomy. On the basis of the performed analyses, it was concluded that together with the increased human pressure on the nature, the average value of NDVI decreased together with the simultaneous increase of indices expressing the diversity, fragmentation and fractal dimension of the landscape.

Spatial and temporal changes of the relationship landuse/landcover were analyzed on three sample plots of Zabory Landscape Park. For past 210 years, the forest economy was conducted with different intensity on each of these sample plots, at present belonging to the Przymuszewo Forest Inspectorate Bory Tucholskie. The structure of landuse/landcover changes being a result of technological changes were analyzed on the basis of cartographical, topographical maps, and remote sensing data from 1796.1999. To characterize changes in the landscape structure selected indices of landscape spatial patterns were calculated. The calculations were made on the level of landscape as well as separate categories of land-use. Most of research goals were realized with the use of Geographical Information Systems technology.

The contemporary structure of the spatial landscape is the result of all activities and processes which took place in the analysed area in the past. Almost every activity of man is reflected in the landscape pattern in the creation of various forms of land use. In this paper, the variation of the landscape pattern of the Zabory Landscape Park is analyzed on three sample plots. The forest economy has been taking place with different activity on each of these sample plots for the previous 210 years. The landscape pattern changes as a result of technological changes were analyzed on the basis of cartographical, topographical maps and remote sensing data from 1796-2000. Six time states were analyzed on the basis of the interpretation of topographical maps, six states on the basis of interpretation of forest review maps of tree stands and aerial photographs, and seven states on the basis of interpretation of satellite imageries. The following source materials are used in the paper: Schrötter-Engelhardt maps (1796-1802), Prussian topographic maps – Messtischblätter (1874), WIG topographic maps (1936), topographic maps in scheme 1942 (1954) and topographic maps in scheme 1965 (1985) and maps revising treestands from: 1911, 1945, 1952-54, 1966, 1976, 1987-88, 1999-2000. To complement revising the maps of treestands panchromatic and colour aerial photographs from 1951, 1964, 1975, 1986 and 1997 were also used. To characterize changes in the landscape structure, the chosen indices of landscape spatial pattern were calculated. The following landscape indices were used: patch density and size metrics, edge metrics, shape metrics (within a fractal dimension and NSCP index), diversity metrics and fragmentation of basic subsections. Calculations were made on the level of a landscape as well as separate categories of land-use. Most of the research goals were achieved with the use of Geographical Information Systems technology. Comparative analysis of the studied sample plots show differences in the landscape structure of these places. Structural differences between the chosen sample plots are shown by using all measurements of indices for landscape mosaic, among others: density and sizes of patches, length of edges, shapes and variations estimated according to cartographic and spatial imagery interpretations. The cause of the strongest transformations in the landscape structure which took place in the sample plots in the 19th century were changes in land use connected with the introduction of the forestry industry. In two sample plots situated in the northern part of Zabory Landscape Park, there was an especially important change from a non-forest to a forest landscape. It took place in the last decade of 19th century. Later, the forest area expanded, but its range and rate of growth was much lower. Cleardifferences between sample plots also took place based on satellite data interpretation. From a comparison of ranges and average values of standardized vegetation index in each area and historical cartographic data, it was concluded that NDVI values in the present satellite images are determined by the way the area was used in the past.
Do porównania przyjęto ponadto następujące wielkości pikseli (oczek rastra): 1, 5, 10, 25, 50 i 100 m.

Digital terrain models (DTM) have become one of the basic and most commonly used sources of data describing the shape of the Earth. Numeric terrain models are only reality models, not the ideal projections. Inseparable elements of terrain models, like in all other groups of spatial data, are mistakes, which exist in the data. There are different methods of acquiring DTM that contribute errors. Some of the most popular methods are: photogrammetric measurements, contour lines, laser scanning (LIDAR), and interferometric (InSAR). Each of them changes data in some other way, using various algorithms. An additional source of mistakes in terrain models using the raster format is the size of the smallest field for which the specified altitude has been defined. The raster model resolution is one of the main features determining the accuracy of terrain projection. The aim of this study was to evaluate the accuracy of chosen terrain models to their application in environment geography studies. This analysis has been used to show the influence of resolution and models of data acquisition for NTM on the accuracy of the terrain model itself, and also on terrain slopes and expositions calculated on its basis. Created models used for the above-mentioned methods were compared. Moreover, the following raster pixels sizes were used for this comparison: 1, 5, 10, 25, 50 and 100 m. The maximal resolution (1 m), is close to the real accuracy of laser measurements. The minimal resolution (100 m) is close to the resolution of the SRTM model. Such a variation of analyzed resolutions makes it possible to observe quite “fluently” how the size and character of mistakes change in separate models. The study area is a 2×2 km test polygon covering part of the Vistula river and its valley and is located near Torun, Poland. The obtained results show the method of collecting data has an essential influence on the accuracy of DTM, especially for high resolution models. Along with a decrease in resolution, differences between models created using separate methods also decrease. For slope models, the collected results show that models with the biggest possible resolution should be used, not smaller than 10 meters. The most essential errors in the definition of aspect are connected with areas with the smallest slopes and are relatively flat.
