Military leadership is closely connected with social communication, which is the process of information creating transforming and sending among individuals, groups and social organisations. The aim of communication in the military is to constantly create, modify or change soldiers' knowledge, attitudes and behaviours directed according to the interests and values of the commander who is influencing them. In military practice four communication styles and four types of commanders can be differentiated. The commander has to find his own style of communication with his subordinates. Thus he may be a commander - friend a commander - adviser, a commander - analyst or a commander - leader. An efficient communication system of a military commander with his subordinates is the basis of effective functioning of social groups that are subordinated to him. Group communication may be an effective form to solve problems in the armed forces.

Leadership is a category that from the synonym of managing and commanding transformed into these actions’ discriminant, pointing at their efficiency and also social effectiveness. It is one of essential abilities, predisposition or characteristics perceived and necessary in contemporary management and command. Military leadership is most often seen as an ability to subordinate soldiers even in critical situations, a skill to exert influence on subordinates’ behaviour and also stimulating and motivating the subordinates to carry out certain tasks. A significant component of military leadership is to strengthen the soldiers’ moral - combat values, their psychological preparation aiming at raising soldiers’ initiative, activity, mobilisation and dedication in fighting.

The reform of national education and transformations taking place in the armed forces give an opportunity to analyse in detail the military education systems carried out in NATO countries. The idea of military education in these countries involves the fact that officers must face many challenges showing their creative thinking, critical perception and decisive actions. Officers must also effectively adopt and use the achievements of military thought developments and technical progress effects. NATO armies’ experiences and solutions applied there in the area of military education are essential for the Polish Armed Forces as a full right member of the Alliance as we are going to introduce many changes that would enable partner co-operation in all coalition activities areas.
