Przedmiotem artykułu jest analiza wybranych dokumentów strategicznych i instrumentów miejskiej polityki przestrzennej wyrażających politykę przestrzenną miasta Londynu w skali okołomiejskiej oraz w skalach wybranych dzielnic. W artykule zwraca się szczególną uwagę na współzależność między tymi dokumentami, a zwłaszcza na ich komplementarność i spójność. Autorzy skoncentrowali się na zagadnieniach sposobów kształtowania relacji przestrzennych oraz funkcjonalnych występujących na styku miasta i rzeki. W polityce przestrzennej Londynu zwraca się uwagę, że relacje te mogą zarówno wpływać na strukturę miasta, jak i tworzyć warunki rozwoju oraz poprawy walorów krajobrazowych miasta. Cele takiej polityki przestrzennej mogą być więc lokowane zarówno na płaszczyźnie przestrzenno-funkcjonalnej, jak i społecznej oraz ekonomicznej. Mogą być także sposobem aktywizacji i dogęszczania centrum miasta. Relacje miasto-rzeka odniesiono do konkretnych przestrzeni południowego nabrzeża Tamizy, które może być tratowane jako obszar kluczowy dla osiągania celów strategicznych całego miasta.

The subject of the article is an analysis of selected strategic documents and instruments of urban spatial policy expressing the spatial policy of the city of London in a suburban scale as well as the scales of selected districts. Attention is paid to the correlations between these documents, particularly their complementarity and consistency. The authors of the paper focused on the issues of the ways of shaping the spatial and functional relations at the junction of the city and the river. In the spatial policy of London, it is pointed out that these relations can both influence the structure of the city and create conditions for the development and improvement of the city’s landscape values. The aims of such a spatial policy can therefore be located both at spatial and functional as well as social and economic levels. They can also be a way to activate and make the city denser. The city-river relationship was related to the specific areas of the southern Thames embankment, which may be treated as a key area for achieving the strategic goals of the entire city.
