The article presents geological and hydrogeological data about shallow aquifers in the western part of the Mazovian province within the town and commune of Sochaczew, in terms of the location of the planned Sochaczew IG-1 geothermal borehole and in terms of its potential for aquifer thermal energy storage (ATES). The analyzed data was from the drilled wells database of the Polish Hydrogeological Survey (PSH). Taking the PSH data into account, parameters of the planned geothermal boreholes, the characteristics of future energy consumers of the ATES as well as to European experiences, it has been found that it is possible to apply one of the variants of the ATES system (e.g. using one or two aquifers for storage). Initially the area was selected where two aquifers could be applied for the ATES system after detailed geophysical studies, tests and observations in at least one exploratory well.
Artykuł informuje o zasobach geotermalnych dostępnych w rejonie Poddębic w odniesieniu do dolno-kredowego poziomu wodonośnego.

The article informs about the geothermal resources available in the Poddębice region in relation to the Lower Cretaceous aquifer. It characterizes the infrastructure and power of the heating system utilizing the heat of its water. This is also characterized by potential new heat recipients from this system. A model of the source of energy for current and future heat consumers was presented, and various variants of its operation were analyzed, including the peak use of heat pumps. For further variants, the following effects were evaluated: energetic, economic and ecological. With respect to the operation of the system with regard to new heat consumers it was pointed out that the use of heat pumps was a good idea, but as a more effective solution, the policy of reducing the required flow temperature of the heating system the part of the customer and lowering the return temperature was recommended.

The article introduces the issue of the use of ATES systems – technology of thermal energy storage in water aquifers. Based on Dutch experience, a world leader in the application of ATES solutions, model results of the environmental impact of large systems and the problem of scale installations in the context of their power and the necessary investment resources for the implementation of such facilities are brought closer. The most interesting European solutions for ATES systems using aquifers in various geological conditions are presented. The geographic location of the Piotrków region is characterized along with the usable water-bearing horizons (Quaternary and Upper Cretaceous) and geothermal reservoirs (Lower Cretaceous, Jurassic and Triassic) occurring there. In the case of the Quaternary horizon, additionally geomorphological, natural and aero sanitary conditions are also generally described.
The main objective of this study was to develop a spatial temperature distribution of the Karkonosze Pluton to indicate optimum locations for HDR systems at drillable depth. HDR geothermal technology makes it possible to extract heat from the Earth in areas where no hydro-geothermal resources are present. To produce electricity in a binary cycle, system temperatures of > 100°C are usually required. In this paper, the authors have analysed the potential opportunities for applying HDR technology in the area of the Karkonosze Pluton, which is regarded as an optimum location for the application of the HDR concept (due to the potential for stimulation offered by the mechanical properties of the granites, radiogenic heat production, modern tectonic activity, and the thickness of the pluton). The model used in the analysis, which takes into account a hypothetical assessment of the manner and paths of fluid migration within the pluton, provides an insight into the spatial distribution of subsurface temperatures. It thus allows the location of relatively shallow high-temperature zones, which are optimal for the efficient application of HDR technology, to be identified. With respect to this technology, the Szklarska Poręba area and the NE part of the pluton seem to be better targets than the Cieplice central area, where the model indicated much lower temperatures (e.g. at a depth of 5,000 m, estimated temperatures in the vicinity of Szklarska Poręba were about 185°C and in the vicinity of Cieplice they were about 140°C).

Prezentowany, hipotetyczny model strukturalno-termiczny uwzględniający sposób i drogi migrujących płynów pokazuje przestrzenny rozkład wgłębnych temperatur w obrębie plutonu.
W artykule przedstawiono elementy budowy geologicznej i hydrogeologicznej Karpat Wschodnich w aspekcie praktycznych możliwości wykorzystania zbiorników wód geotermalnych ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem rejonu Jasła.

The article presents the elements of the geological and hydrogeological conditions of Eastern Carpathians in terms of the practical possibilities of using geothermal water reservoirs for a particular focus on the area Jasło. Due to the expected low yield, the reservoirs may be relevant mainly local. The analyzed data derived mainly from exploration drillings conducted in order to the exploration and exploitation of bitumen. By example of reservoir zone „Roztoki” near Jasło it was demonstrated a potential for exploitation of geothermal waters after reconstruction of one of the abandoned exploration wells. Based on the data of PGNiG – Sanok, the analysis occurring horizons was made and pointed out the possibility of utilizing the local resources of geothermal waters. The initial multivariante analysis of energy, economic and environmental potential of geothermal resources were made. Also pointed-out to reconstruction the well S-11, which would constitute a fundamental part of the future technological system.
The fast-growing discipline in the field of geothermal research is the prospecting for geological structures useful for HDR (Hot Dry Rock) or EGS (Enhanced Geothermal Systems) technologies. In Poland, an interesting area for such research is the Sudetes, particularly the Karkonosze Mts. pluton and Fore-Sudetic Block. The article presents issues of scientific projects prepared in the Division of Renewable Energy of Mineral and Energy Economy Research, Institute of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Kraków, related to the recognition of geothermal conditions of the Sudetic region. On the background of global research, these projects demonstrate an innovative character mainly by targeting research on the analysis of tectonics and volcanism of the Sudetes as important factors of the presence of local positive thermal anomalies. Implementation of the afore-mentioned projects would create the possibility of extending still modest knowledge of the deep geological structure of the Sudetic area.

Looking in Poland for geological structures suitable for hot dry rock technology (HDR - Hot Dry Rock), we propose a new integrated method for selection of geological, petrographic, petrological, geophysical and hydrogeological data in order to descriminate between suitable geological objects. This approach allows identification of the most promising regional geological units in Poland: the Sudetes Mt. and the Fore-Sudetic block. The most prospective local geological units in those areas are granitoid massifs, in particular the Karkonosze granite pluton. The abandoned Michałowice granite quarry, located within the Karkonosze pluton, is proposed as a potential drilling site that best meet the requirements for a thermal modelling study.
Nawiązując do złożonej przeszłości geologicznej tych obszarów, dokonano przeglądu dawnych źródeł ciepła geotermalnego i związanych z nimi utworów skalnych.

W ostatnim dwudziestoleciu osadniki podlegały samoistnej przyrodniczej renaturyzacji. Obecne zamierzenia planistyczne preferują tutaj funkcję przyrodniczo-użytkową o charakterze publicznym. Kierunek tym przemianom nadaje bliskie sąsiedztwo Sanktuarium, a szczególnie historyczny związek tych terenów z osobą Jana Pawła II i powstające na dawnych osadnikach Centrum JP II "Nie lękajcie się". Od 2007 r. autorzy (Zespół Pracowni Inżynierii Ekologicznej IGSMiE PAN w Krakowie) uczestniczą w pracach dotyczących planowania i zagospodarowania "Białych Mórz". Artykuł przybliża związane z tym wybrane problemy, szczegółowo analizowane w pracach źródłowych (Sroczyński i in. 2007a, b; 2009).

"Biale Morza" in Krakow-Lagiewniki is located in the east part of post-industrial terrains after "Solvay" Krakow Soda Works. This plant finished its activity in 1989 and the main reason of its closure was an extensive noxiousness on the environment. Earlier, since the thirties of 20th century, on the discussed terrain, wastes were placed, mainly mud in the ponds located above the ground, in all ca. 5 million tons. In the last twenty years, ponds were subjected to self-contained renaturation. Nowadays plans prefer here a nature-utilization function with public character. Close neighborhood of the Sanctuary, historical connection of those terrains with John Paul II and forming JP II Center "Be Not Afraid!" give a direction of those transformations. Since 2007 authors (group from Division of Ecological Engineering - Mineral and Energy Economy Research Institute Polish Academy of Sciences, Krakow) have participated in works apply to planning and management of "Biale Morza". This article presents the problems connected with the works, which are analyzed in the sources (Sroczynski et al. 2007a, b; 2009). On the historic background and utilization perspectives, conditions and geological and engineering restrictions for local plan needs are discussed (they influence ecophysiographical division). A reader gets acquainted with initial results of new works stage - assessment of soil from excavations under JP II Center in connection with obligatory legal adjustments.

The prospected development of renewable power industry in Poland - in relation to integration with European Union - invokes the reflection upon the development of unconventional energy acquisition meeting the requirements of the constitutional rule of sustainable development. This paper is an attempt to solve this problem in relation to Skierniewice region, located in the central Poland. In association with environmental conditions four land categories (N, S, L, S/L) were designated and the types of power plant (solar, wind, biomass, biogas and geothermal) were defined for each land category. In the case of geothermal waters the 3-step ecological preferences were proposed to indicate the location of geothermal power plants (a, b, g) alongside with protected or requiring protection natural environment areas and applying the data about resources available for exploitation (two objects - openings in Sierniewice and Mszczonow). The expected spatial demand for geothermal energy was taken into consideration and potential places of new power plants locations were indicated. Different technological solutions, including adapting the existing industrial infrastructure, also were suggested

Przewidywany rozwój w Polsce energetyki odnawialnej, w związku z procesem integracji z Unią Europejską, skłania do zastanowienia się nad sposobem rozwijania energetyki niekonwencjonalnej w zgodzie z konstytucyjną zasadą zrównoważonego rozwoju. Zasugerowano również sposób skorzystania w nich z różnych rozwiązań technicznych, m.in. adaptujących istniejącą infrastrukturę techniczną.
