New criteria for characterization of pitting corrosion of duplex stainless steels at the microscale

In this work, the electrochemical microcel technique bas been coupled with a Peltier heating stage to study the local electro-chemical behaviour of both phases of duplex stainless steels (UNS 31803 and UNS S32304) in 1.7M NaCl (pH=3) at 25°C and 80°C. The results (anodic and cathodic current densities, corrosion potential, pitting sites...) have been analysed consider-ing the microstructure and the mechanical state (determined by thermo-mechanical model) under the microcapillary. The results show a relationship between the corrosion potential and the stress distribution at the specimen surface. Moreover, the results derived from the corrosion tests seem to show that the microstructure and/or the mechanical stress have a significant role in pitting corrosion.
