The supplementation of compressed natural gas (CNG) fuel with a hydrogen-rich additive, via an exhaust gas reforming process, potentially offers significant improvements in cobustion stability and tolerance of exhaust gas recirculation (EGR). An experiment was conducted on a purpose built single-cylinder test engine to evaluate the envelope of benefit of hydrogen enrichment in terms of extended EGR tolerance. The tolerance of the stoichiometric CNG engine to EGR, measured in terms of combustion stability, is shown to be greatly extended by the hydrogen enrichment and corresponding improvements in engine emission were found. Further work was undertaken, using a micro-reactor test rig, to assess the exhaust-gas reforming process. The performance of prototype catalysts was found to correlate well with the hydrogen requirements indicated by the envelope of benefit testing.
