Training of seafarers is traditionally focusing merely on the ‘occupational’ aspect. Competent seafarers have always been defined as people who have good professional, navigational or engineering skills. However, practice shows that these skills alone are often not enough to solve complex situations at sea. This article attempts to look at life and work at sea as a multidimensional phenomenon. The personal reaction to the social field challenges is unique for every person because of his ideas, feelings, behaviour, needs, moral values and physical attributes. The aim of the presented article is to describe a theoretical research model, which reflects the interaction of young seafarers and a social space on board a ship, and to determine the adaptation and well-being support measures used by young seafarers on board.

MET institution’s mission is not only preparing young people for maritime career at sea, forming their professional competences, but also providing help in their career management. For this reason, it is important to know new seafarers’ generation needs and career ambitions, as well as expectations from employers’ point of view. Mutual understanding would help to find a balance between expectations of both and adequately manage changes. Results of research, conducted by surveying 4th year full-time students studying at the Lithuanian Maritime Academy and experts from shipping and crewing companies in Lithuania and Latvia regarding desirable contract conditions and seafarers’ personal and/or professional characteristics, important for successful career, are presented in the article.

Question of improvement quality of studies is a continual hot issue in every educational envi-ronment. In maritime education and training, this question is especially important because of international regulations of maritime professions. Quality of studies is a multidimensional and complex phenomenon. It is influenced by wide range of factors: from labour market and current educational policy to individual students’ efforts and characteristics. Motives of choosing maritime profession and approaches to learning are character-istics of an individual person. Quality of studies is influenced by students’ approaches to learning: deep ap-proach to learning is related with higher quality of studies, surface approach – to lower quality. On the other hand approaches to learning could be influenced by motives of choosing profession, which affect entire pro-fessional career planning. Both phenomena are important for the improvement of quality of studies. The relation between motives of choosing maritime professions and students’ approaches to learning in the context of quality of studies are under investigation in this paper.

East and Central Europe countries practically experience advantages and disadvantages of sea-farers‘ employment in foreign shipping companies. There is a need to investigate this phenomenon in the aspect of economical emigration. Shortage of marine officers worldwide exaggerates the shortage of seafarers in the mentioned region because of the economical emigration of national seafarers to foreign fleet, which pro-vides more favorable conditions. These facts encouraged investigating several questions using case study method in one country (Lithuania), which social-economic conditions are similar to other countries of the re-gion: What shipping companies (national or foreign) marine officers give priority to be employed to? What is the motivation of such a decision? What personal characteristics mostly determine this decision? The study results show very strong seafarers’ attitude towards economical emigration, reveal the reasons of this phenomenon and relations with the personal characteristics of marine officers.
