Content available remote High-power pump combiners for Tm-doped fibre lasers
EN
In this paper our results of investigation on a pump power combiner in a configuration of 7×1 are presented. The performed combiner, with pump power of 80–85% transmission level, was successfully applied in a thulium doped fibre laser. The performed all-fibre laser setup reached a total CW output power of 6.42 W, achieving the efficiency on a 32.1% level.

The objective of this paper was to present an alternative technique of manufacturing the unit cells of spiral-shaped resonators (SR) on the aluminium nitride (AlN) ceramics. In this technique the AlN plane surface is irradiated by the Yb:glass medium-power laser (1.06 μm). As a result of the irradiation by a focused laser beam (a laser beam power up to 20 W), the rupture of the aluminium and nitrogen physical bonds occurs. Under such circumstances the conductive aluminium “paths” are formed on the originally insulating ceramic surface. Upon obtaining low ohmic conductive paths, this method makes for the feasible manufacturing of metamaterial structures. In carried out studies, the usage of such structures to suppress the coupling between pairs of patch antennas has been examined. The improvement of the mutual coupling at the level of 10 dB has been obtained. One of the advantages of the demonstrated method is a possibility to perform the selective and direct metallization of the AlN ceramics surface without using any mask as opposed to photolithography. It greatly reduces the implementation time of the projected metamaterial structures.

This paper presents the concept and experimental verification of a simple method of wavelength preselection of a single frequency, second-harmonic generation SHG solid state laser Nd:YAG/KTP with the Lyot filter. Apart from well-known configuration of single-frequency operation, the Lyot filter to stabilization of the wavelength was used. The idea presented is based on a measurement of the losses introduced by the Lyot filter inside the laser cavity, or the maximums of laser output power as a measure of the assessment of the Lyot filter tuning to a required laser longitudinal mode, not requiring any external frequency standards. This method allows for the synthesization and stabilization of a selected wavelength from the spectrum range of the gain curve of the laser with the period determined by the "Lyot comb". In the developed system 15 values of wavelength spaced at about 32 pm (∼ 7.9 GHz) for the infrared radiation were obtained.

Content available remote Laser prototyping of printed circuit boards
EN
This paper describes the application of laser micromachining to rapid prototyping of printed circuit boards (PCB) using nanosecond lasers: the solid-state Nd:YAG (532/1064 nm) laser and the Yb:glass fiber laser (1060 nm). Our investigations included tests for various mask types (synthetic lacquer, light-sensitive emulsion and tin). The purpose of these tests was to determine some of the basic parameters such as the resolution of PCB prototyping, speed of processing and quality of PCB mapping with commonly available laser systems. Optimization of process parameters and the proposed conversion algorithm have allowed us to produce circuit boards with a resolution similar to that of the Laser Direct Imaging (LDI) technology.

Erbium-doped fibre laser mode-locked by a graphene saturable absorber is presented. Pulses with 630-fs duration and 41.9-MHz repetition frequency were achieved at the centre wavelength of 1562 nm and 9-nm FWHM bandwidth. Multilayer graphene was obtained by mechanical exfoliation from a pure graphite block by using the scotch-tape method and deposited on a fibre ferrule to form a saturable absorber. The laser operated in a mode-locked regime with 37-mW pumping and 4-mW output power.

Content available remote Single-longitudinal mode Nd:YVO₄/YVO₄/KTP green solid state laser
EN
We present the concept and practical realization of a single frequency, tuneable diode pumped Nd:YVO₄/YVO₄/KTP microchip laser operating at 532 nm. Theoretical analysis of the single mode operation of such a laser configuration is presented. The single frequency operation has been obtained in a birefringent filter, where an YVO₄ beam displacer acts as an ideal polarizer. Experimental results are in good agreement with theoretical analysis. We have obtained stable single frequency operation, tuneable over 0.6 nm in the spectral range around 1064 nm. The laser operated with output power up to 110 mW at 53 nm. The total optical efficiency (808 nm to 532 nm) was 14%.

Content available remote Blue 473-nm solid state diode pumped Nd:YAG/BiBO microchip laser
EN
In this paper we present a design of a compact, low power diode-pumped CW Nd:YAG laser operating at 946 nm with intracavity blue light generation at 473 nm for battery operated applications. The nonlinear crystal used in the experiment is a BiBO crystal cut for phase-matching type I. Using 0.8 W of pumping power, 20-mW stabile output power of blue light was achieved. The second harmonic generation conversion efficiency was 2.5%.

Passively mode-locked erbium doped fiber ring laser was investigated. We present optimization of laser configuration where nonlinear polarization rotation was used for modes synchronization. Simulations of pulse propagation inside a laser cavity were applied in order to confirm the optimisation technique. Experimental results are presented and more than 32-nm spectral width of the output frequency comb was obtained.

Modern WDM telecommunication systems require stable and calibrated laser sources. In this paper, we present examples of such lasers based on erbium doped fibres, i.e., discretely tunable and multiwavelength ring lasers. For the first case, tuning is possible due to a tunable Bragg grating overlapping spectrally the third telecommunication window (1550 nm). When a Fabry-Perot etalon is inserted into the cavity, discrete tunable operation with appropriate spacing between operating wavelengths is possible. Different free spectral ranges (FSR) of applied etalons ensured operation at a wavelength spacing 0.4 nm, 0.8 nm or 1.6 nm, respectively. When an acoustooptical Bragg frequency shifter was inserted together with the Fabry-Perot etalon, the stable simultaneous multiwavelength operation covering the erbium doped gain range was achieved.

Content available remote Quality criterion for numerical methods in EDFA modelling.
EN
Based on the quality criterion introduced in the paper it is possible to evaluate numerical solutions obtained for different methods used in the analysis of erbium-doped fibre amplifiers (EDFA) and compare them. The 4-th order Runge-Kutta method and average power analysis technique are set against the modified midpoint (MM) method that is a new one in the context of solving EDFA propagation equations. The MM method has been proved a very effective tool in EDFA modelling.

Content available remote Photonic electromagnetic field sensor developments
EN
The paper presents the development of the photonic sensors for electromagnetic field (EMF) measurements. The first applications were limited to the telemetry only. The basic advantage of photonic sensors is the preserved spectral and phase information. Attempts to improve the sensitivity of sensors are illustrated with a Mach-Zehnder interferometer and internal FM modulation of a laser with heterodyne detection. A new concept of the sensor with the use of the Fabry-Perot filter as a wideband frequency discriminator is introduced. Widebandedness limitations due to elasto-optic phenomena in electro-optic crystals and pattern synthesis are mentioned.
