An advance in the material engineering of biomaterials intended for hip joint replacement prostheses is a very important social matter due to incurable diseases or injuries of human joints happening to many people. For this purpose, a development of the tribological test techniques is also an urgent issue. The paper is devoted to the study of the tribological behaviour of the new “Nitrided GRADE 2/PE-UHMW” friction pair intended for hip joint endoprostheses. A pendulum tribometer and a ring-on-plane machine were used for tribological research. A new lubricant based on chondroitin sulphate was tribologically investigated compared to commonly used bovine blood serum. Also the technology of thermo-diffusion nitriding (TDN) of the GRADE 2 femoral head was optimised based on the results of the tribological experiments. A means of selecting of the geometrical parameters of the prosthetic implants to achieve the smallest wear is discussed. The optimum technology of machining of the femoral head made of the GRADE 2 titanium alloy to obtain the best surface quality is also presented. The paper consists of the first part of the results of the Polish-Ukrainian cooperation in testing biomaterials. The second part, to be also submitted to Tribologia, will describe the aspects of methodology of endoprosthesis simulation tests and test results, and it will present a difference in the wear of the hip joint prosthesis – the developed and commercial one.

Do badań tribologicznych wykorzystano tribometr wahadłowy i maszynę typu pierścień–płaszczyzna.
Injuries due to slips in swimming pools or toilets in hospitals are significant social problems. It primarily concerns children making use of swimming pools or hospitalised old people, and physically disabled. Thus, within the scope of a R&D project, coordinated by the company C.T. Service from Lesznowola, a formula and way of deposition for an anti-slip coating dedicated to the soles of shoes were developed in order to increase friction on wet surfaces. A special machine – T-31 Simulator – for tribological testing of the friction and wear of the soles of shoes was developed. A method for precise determination of the coefficient of friction between a sole of a shoe (with the coating or without, on dry or wet surface) and a floor material, and a method for determination of the life (resistance to abrasion) of the anti-slip coating under conditions simulating walking were developed. To verify the developed test methods, the anti-slip coating was deposited on three types of sole materials, i.e. Thunit, polyurethane, and thermoplastic rubber, sliding against four types of the floor material, i.e. floor tile “Gres,” laminated flooring, sandstone, and granite. The paper presents the developed test device and test methods for friction and wear testing of the anti-slip coating deposited on the soles of shoes. The selected research results are also presented. On their base, a very good repeatability and good resolution of the developed test methods were stated.

The article presents results obtained in studies of surface fatigue life conducted using a specially developed unique method in a model system with a cone and three balls. The studies involved pairs in which the cones were made of 100Cr6 and SW7M steel (hardened) as well as 17HMN steel, which were subjected to low-pressure carburizing with pre-nitriding (PreNitLPC®) technology. The results obtained for the pairs were used as a point of reference for pairs in which the test elements were coated with a-C:H:W (WC/C) and additionally, in the case of 17HNM steel, with Si-DLC (DLC SiliComp). The temperature of the coating process did not exceed 200°C in all cases, and the coating thickness was in the range of 1.5-20 µm. The studies were conducted in the presence of pure synthetic oil PAO8. Based on the studies, it was concluded that thin PVD coatings applied to heavily loaded steel elements of rolling friction joints variously affected the surface fatigue life of the steel coated with them. The observations cannot be unambiguously accounted for by any technological rules, and there is no available physical explanation for their underlying causes.

W tym celu w Zakładzie Tribologii ITeE – PIB w Radomiu opracowano urządzenie T-12UF do badania tarcia i zużycia kół zębatych walcowych w układzie mocy krążącej.

Finding the effect of a new type of a lubricating oil (e.g. ecological one) or a new way of the tooth flank modification (e.g. by deposition of a thin, low-friction coating) on the life of gears is possible only experimentally. For that purpose, at the Tribology Department of the Institute for Sustainable Technologies in Radom (ITeE – PIB), a new test rig, denoted as T-12UF, has been developed. It is intended for the back-to-back testing of the friction and wear of spur gears. Three dangerous forms of wear can be tested: scuffing/scoring, pitting, and micro pitting. In the paper, a modified version of the T-12UF test rig is presented, namely the test rig denoted as T-12UM. For the purpose of implementation in a lab of one of the domestic technical universities, the new test rig needed to be validated using reference oils having extremely different extreme-pressure (EP) properties – oils called “Low” and “High.” Two gear scuffing test methods were used. Four reference oils (two of every “Low” and “High”) for each test method were employed. During the validation, the authors checked if it is possible to identify the appearance of scuffing/scoring by monitoring the friction torque. The obtained results of the validation are as expected, which indicates that the new test rig runs properly and the scuffing test methods are realised correctly.
Istnieje wiele problemów związanych z eksploatacją kół zębatych stożkowych o zębach łukowych. Przykładowo trudne warunki smarowania prowadzą do nadmiernego wzrostu temperatury, a to z kolei wywołuje ryzyko poważnego zużycia. W fazie pierwszej, laboratoryjnej, użyto urządzenia T-30 do badania kół zębatych stożkowych, opracowanego i wytworzonego w ITeE – PIB w Radomiu. Faza druga to były badania weryfikacyjne z użyciem przenośnika zgrzebłowego stosowanego w górnictwie węgla kamiennego, pracującego w warunkach podobnych do występujących w kopalniach. W badaniach laboratoryjnych do smarowania użyto handlowego, samochodowego oleju przekładniowego klasy jakościowej API GL-5 i lepkościowej 80W-90. W badaniach weryfikacyjnych (półprzemysłowych) do smarowania użyto oleju bazowego mineralnego klasy lepkościowej VG32.

There are many problems in the operation of spiral bevel gears; for example, difficult lubrication conditions lead to excessively high oil temperature and the risk of severe wear. Thus, the aim of this work was to check whether, by the deposition of a thin, hard, low-friction coating on the teeth flanks of spiral bevel gears, it is possible to improve the resistance to wear, reduce friction, and possibly the gear vibrations. The tribological experiments were carried out in two phases. In the first phase, a bevel gear test rig was used (laboratory testing). In the second phase, a verification test was performed using an industrial gear stand (chain conveyor) working under conditions typical of coal mines. The low-friction WC/C coating was tested. The coating was deposited on the teeth of the wheels. For reference, the uncoated pairs of spiral bevel gears were tested. In the laboratory testing, a commercial, mineral automotive gear oil of the API GL-5 performance level and 80W-90 viscosity grade was used for lubrication. For lubrication of the industrial gears, a mineral base oil of the low, VG32 viscosity grade was chosen. The results obtained show that, by the deposition of the low-friction WC/C coating on the teeth of the wheel, the following beneficial effects can be achieved in comparison with the case of the uncoated gears: a rise in the resistance to the two forms of severe wear (scuffing and pitting), and a drop in the oil temperature (lower friction) at first tests stages. The above effects are accompanied at the first stages of the tests by an undesired, higher level of vibrations in case of the steel–WC/C material combination. However, throughout the test, the vibrations for the two material combinations became similar. Thus, the WC/C coating can be applied to increase the wear resistance and decrease the oil temperature in transmissions containing spiral bevel gears in, e.g., chain conveyors installed in coal mines.
Do wyznaczania rozkładu naprężeń zastosowano dyfrakcyjną metodę sin2ψ, wykorzystywaną dotychczas w nauce i przemyśle przede wszystkim do oceny poprawności procesów technologicznych, zwłaszcza pod kątem uzyskiwanej wytrzymałości obrabianych elementów.

The aim of this article was to present the methodological assumptions of determining residual stresses in the surface layer of components undergoing tribological tests. The presented approach to residual stresses measurements includes a series of measurements conducted through the middle of the specimen friction track. The sin2ψ diffraction method, which is widely used in science and industrial sectors, was applied to determine the distribution of residual stresses. The cone-shaped samples from bearing steel 100Cr6 and high-speed steel SW7M were tested. By means of developed method the authors analysed the influence of WC/C and DLC coating deposition on the residual stresses of steel samples. The aplication of develped method makes it possible to determine the changes of residua stresses in the tribological samples.
W artykule przedstawiono, opracowane w Instytucie Technologii Eksploatacji - PIB w Radomiu, urządzenie i metodykę badania zacierania kół zębatych stożkowych o łukowej linii zęba.

The paper presents a new, developed at ITeE-PIB in Radom, testing device and test method for scuffing investigation of spiral bevel gears. The idea of the new test rig resulted from an issue often expressed by manufacturers of machines equipped with gears, concerning a necessity to improve the reliability of tests - popular gear tests are run mostly on spur gears having the tooth geometry significantly different than bevel gears. Due to the lack of standard test procedures, the authorial method for testing scuffing of bevel gears was designed and verified. Gear oils representing various performance levels, including an ecological oil, were investigated in terms of the scuffing prevention. For each the tested oil the motion resistance in the form of the friction torque was measured. The aforementioned approach is caused by the potential requirements concerning the application of ecological lubricants, as well as the tendency to reduce the temperature of gears, being an effect of reducing friction. The results of the conducted tests indicate that the new test method has a good resolution.
There are many problems in the operation of spiral bevel gears; for example difficult lubrication conditions and high friction between meshing teeth leads to excessively high oil temperature and the risk of scuffing. Thus, the aim of this work was to check whether by the deposition of a thin, hard, low-friction coating on the teeth flanks of spiral bevel gears it is possible to reduce friction and improve scuffing resistance. The tribological experiments were carried out using two tribotesters: T-02U Four-ball testing machine and T-30 Bevel gear test rig. Two types of thin, low-friction coatings were tested. The first one was a-C:H:W. The other one was MoS2/Ti. The coatings were deposited on one or more tested samples (test balls and bevel gears), so the four material combinations were obtained: steel-steel, coating-steel, steel-coating, and coating-coating. For lubrication a commercial, mineral automotive gear oil of the API GL-5 performance level and 80W-90 viscosity grade was used. The results of the four-ball tests show that the a-C:H:W coating deposited on the teeth flanks is much more effective in friction reduction than MoS2/Ti. The deposition of the a-C:H:W coating on the teeth of the spiral bevel gears proves to be very helpful in reducing friction between the meshing gears. The combination of the a-C:H:W-coated pinion meshing the uncoated wheel is the most efficient. Concerning the improvement of the scuffing resistance, two material combinations are the most effective: a-C:H:W-coated pinion meshing the uncoated wheel and the both gears coated.

Istnieje wiele problemów związanych z eksploatacją kół zębatych stożkowych o zębach łukowych, np. trudne warunki smarowania i wysokie tarcie w zazębieniu, prowadzące do zbyt wysokiej temperatury oleju i pojawienia się ryzyka zacierania. Zostały one osadzone na jednym bądź więcej elementach testowych (kulki łożyskowe, koła zębate), uzyskując cztery kombinacje materiałowe: stal-stal, powłoka-stal, stal-powłoka i powłoka-powłoka. Do smarowania użyto handlowego, samochodowego oleju przekładniowego klasy jakościowej API GL-5 i lepkościowej 80W-90, z bazą mineralną.
Recently, it was reported that low-friction coatings deposited on steel substrates exhibit excellent behaviour under scuffing conditions. However, a factor still limiting the scope of the application of the coatings is their poor performance under conditions of cyclic contact stress, which leads to accelerated fatigue failures (pitting). Two PVD coatings were tested: WC/C and MoS2/Ti. For the complex testing of gears, a back-to-back gear test rig, denoted as T-12U, was used. Two methods were applied: scuffing shock test (S-A10/16,6R/120) and the gear-pitting test (PT C/10/90). Steel gears coated with low-friction coatings exhibit excellent behaviour under scuffing conditions. The resistance to pitting wear of coated steel gears depends on not only the coating material but also on which steel gear is coated.

In this work, the authors analyse the possibility of using a new test method, called the method for the determination of the limiting pressure of seizure poz, to differentiate between the API GL performance levels of automotive transmission and axle oils from the point of view of their EP properties. The new test is performed under conditions of the scuffing of the four-ball tribosystem, initiated by the linearly increasing load, until seizure occurs. In numerous publications, it has been shown that the new test has many pros in comparison with standardised tests used for the assessment of extreme-pressure (EP) properties of lubricants. It exhibits a better resolution and is quicker, cheaper, and its precision is comparable to the precision of the standardised tests of EP properties of lubricants. A representative group of the automotive gear oils of the API GL-1 to GL-5(LS) performance level was tested using a four-ball tribotester with the sliding tribosystem. It has been shown that the method for the determination of the limiting pressure of seizure poz makes it possible to differentiate between most of the API performance levels of the automotive gear oils – both qualitatively (i.e. by the analysis of the friction torque curves) and quantitatively (on the basis of poz values); although, the qualitative way is more effective (better resolution) than the quantitative one. Because the new test method reduces the cost (simple, inexpensive test specimens) and the duration of the testing, it can be applied in R&D industrial labs to verify the quality of automotive gear oils.

Dokonano oceny możliwości zastosowania własnej metody, nazwanej metodą wyznaczania granicznego nacisku zatarcia poz, do różnicowania samochodowych olejów przekładniowych pod względem klas jakościowych API z punktu widzenia właściwości przeciwzatarciowych.

The paper presents a test rig and methods developed at the Institute for Sustainable Technologies in Radom for the tribological testing of spiral bevel gears. The idea resulted from a problem announced by some manufacturers concerning devices in which bevel gears are used (e.g. gearmotors), concerning an improvement in the reliability of the tests. Until now, widely used test devices and methods have allowed researchers to perform runs on only spur gears having the tooth geometry different than the geometry of bevel gears. Because there is a lack of the standardised, tribological test methods concerning bevel gears, test methods have been developed by the authors. They relate to research on the most dangerous modes of wear of bevel gears, such as scuffing/seizure and surface fatigue (pitting). The aim of these tests will be the determination of an effect of gear oils as well as modern techniques of surface modification by the deposition of thin, hard, low-friction coatings, on the mentioned modes of wear. This approach results from a potential requirement concerning the introduction of ecological oils (with a natural base) for the lubrication of gears, and the tendency to a reduction in the bevel gear temperature (due to lower friction), which is achievable through the application of low-friction coatings on the teeth of bevel gears.

The aim of the study was to investigate the resistance to rolling contact fatigue of WC/C coated gears. The test were done for low-friction WC/C (a-C:H:W) coating. The coating was deposited using the PVD process by reactive sputtering. The investigation of rolling contact fatigue was realised by means of a T-02U using the PT C/10/90 method. Four material combinations of gears were tested: wheel and pinion uncoated, wheel and pinion coated, wheel coated and pinion uncoated, and wheel uncoated and pinion coated. The test were performed for mineral gear oil of GL-5 API performance level (80W/90). The test results indicate that resistance to the pitting wear of gears with coated wheels do not depend only on the coating material but also on the selection of coated wheel. To increase the fatigue life of gears, the coating should be deposited on the gear for which the unit friction work of teeth is lower.

The aim of the work was to assess the influence of the properties of manual transmission fluids (also called automotive gear oils) on the resistance to micropitting of gears. The FZG GT-C/8,3/90 micropitting test method was performed using a T-12U gear test rig. Three mineral, automotive gear oils of different performance levels were tested – API GL-3, GL-4 and GL-5 oils, as well as a synthetic (PAO) GL-5 oil. For reference, two industrial gear oils were also tested, and one of them was biodegradable oil. The results show that there is no influence of API GL performance levels of automotive gear oils on micropitting. The biodegradable industrial gear oil gives a high resistance to micropitting like the best automotive gear oils. There is no correlation between friction, EP properties, and fatigue (pitting) life and the resistance to micropitting. However, concerning oil viscosity and lubricating film thickness, it exerts a beneficial influence on the resistance to micropitting. The research on micropitting will be continued.
Celem prac było sprawdzenie możliwości zastosowania oleju naturalnego i białego jako bazy olejów przekładniowych. Testom poddano cztery modelowe oleje przekładniowe - z bazą mineralną, syntetyczną węglowodorową (PAO), białą i naturalną (olej rzepakowy).

The aim of the work was to assess the possibilities of using natural and white oils as potential bases of gear oils. Four model gear oils were tested – with mineral, synthetic hydrocarbon (PAO), white, and natural (rapeseed) base oil, all of similar viscosity. The oils contained additives typical of gear oils, e.g. EP additives, antifoam additives, and antioxidants. Tribological four-ball tests (with sliding and rolling contact) and gear tests were performed. In addition, physico-chemical analyses of the aged oils were carried out. The results show that, in comparison with "classical" oils, the white oil gives a better resistance of gears to micropitting, more stable physico-chemical characteristics during the long storage, similar antifriction properties, similar resistance of gears to scuffing under extreme conditions, close resistance of gears to pitting, a similar level of gear vibrations, and close thermo-oxidative stability in gear experiments. The white oil also shows a drawback, which is a significant acceleration of the pitting of bearing balls. In comparison with "classical" oils, the natural (rapeseed) oil reduces the level of gear vibrations, gives similar antifriction properties, a similar resistance of gears to pitting, and close stability of physico-chemical characteristics during the long storage. However, the natural oil shows numerous drawbacks, e.g. a lower resistance of gears to scuffing under extreme conditions, a much lower resistance of gears to micropitting, a significant acceleration of pitting of bearing balls, and worse thermo-oxidative stability in gear experiments. When removal of the drawbacks of the white and natural oils appears impossible, they can be partly compensated by using them for the lubrication of machine elements (e.g. gears) working under moderate conditions. Additionally, in case of natural oils, it is recommended that the time of their exploitation should be shortened.

The experimental results of the ecological industrial gear oil manufactured on the base of vegetable products are presented. The oil was formulated in the Institute for Sustainable Technologies - National Research Institute in Radom. This industrial oil fulfilled main requirements specified in the domestic standard PN-C-96056:1990, concerning physico-chemical and tribological properties. But due to the chemical structure and the great importance of tribological properties, the oil was tested using methods not included in the above mentioned standard. Additionally friction, extreme-pressure properties under severe conditions, resistance of gears to pitting and micropitting, fatigue life of rolling elements of bearings, thermo-oxidative stability of the oil after long-term gear experiments, and stability of physico-chemical characteristics during long-lasting storage were evaluated. The experimental results of the ecological oil were compared to the results obtained for its commercial, mineral equivalent. The results show that the ecological oil fulfills main requirements included in the mentioned standard. It exhibits even better tribological properties compared with the mineral oil, e.g. lower friction and improvement of the resistance to micropitting in gear tests. Under conditions of dip lubrication (the gear pitting tests) the ecological oil reduces the level of vibrations in comparison with the mineral oil, but during the gear micropitting tests (spray lubrication) a reverse trend is observed. However, there are significant drawbacks of the ecological oil. They are: the unfavourable change (drop) in the viscosity index during the long-lasting storage, worse thermo-oxidative stability (much viscosity rise) after the gear experiments and a drop of the resistance of gears to scuffing under a very big load. The worst drawback is a significant acceleration of pitting of bearing balls. In case when removal of these drawbacks appears to be impossible, they can be partly compensated by a shorter service and storage time of the ecological oil and using it for lubrication of gears working under moderate conditions.

The verification of performance of lubricants, e.g. new gear oils requires that gear tests should be carried out. The most popular system of gear research has been developed in the Gear Research Center (German abbreviation: FZG) at the Technical University of Munich. The authors present three new FZG gear test methods for the testing of lubricating oils. The test methods are at the stage of standardisation; for the time being their procedures are available in the FVA Information Sheets. The first test method, denoted as S-A10/16,6R/120, is intended for differentiating between lubricating oils from the point of view of their EP (extreme-pressure) properties. It is carried out under much severer ('shock') test conditions than the popular scuffing test method A/8,3/90. The reason is that the A/8,3/90 test makes it impossible to differentiate between e.g. modern automotive gear oils of high performance (API GL) levels because the Failure Load Stage (i.e. the load at which significant scuffing appears) exceeds maximum - 12th - load stage irrespectively of the oil performance level. It has been shown that the 'shock' test method has a better resolution and makes it possible to differentiate between automotive gear oils that belong to API GL-4/GL-5, GL-5 and GL-5(LS) level. The second test method, denoted as PT C/10/90, is intended for investigation of an influence of lubricating oils on surface fatigue (pitting) of test gears. It has been shown that - despite big scatter of results, typical of surface fatigue tests - the method makes it possible to obtain a 'desired' form of wear, i.e. pitting, while other forms of wear (e.g. scuffing) are of minor significance or do not appear at all. The third test method, denoted as GT-C/8,3/90, concerns investigation of an effect of lubricating oils on micropitting of test gears. It has been shown that the method makes it possible to obtain a 'desired' form of wear, i.e. micropitting, and additionally differentiates between an effect of automotive gear oils of API GL-3 and GL-5 level on micropitting. A new test rig, denoted as T-12U, for comprehensive gear testing, designed and manufactured by ITeE-PIB in Radom, is also presented in the paper. Because gear tests are much longer and much more expensive than tests performed on simple specimens, a four-ball test method developed at ITeE-PIB is presented for reference. The method is intended for testing EP properties of lubricating oils at continuously increasing load. The results obtained have been referred to the results of the gear 'shock' test S-A10/16,6R/120. It has been shown that the four-ball test makes it possible to differentiate between automotive gear oils in the way similar to the gear tests, but at significantly shorter time and lower cost. The presented test methods can be successfully applied in R&D laboratories in the petroleum industry, as well as in laboratories carrying out R&D work in the field of gear materials and surface engineering.
W ITeE – PIB w Radomiu opracowano olej ekologiczny o nazwie Arol P220 do przekładni przemysłowych. Dlatego przeprowadzono szereg dodatkowych testów porównawczych obu olejów (ekologicznego i handlowego mineralnego) – czterokulowych (styk ślizgowy i toczny), przekładniowych i fizykochemicznych, nie ujętych w normie PN-C-96056:1990.

At ITeE – PIB in Radom, an ecological industrial gear oil, denoted as Arol P220, has been formulated. The oil is based on the mixture of rapeseed and castor oils, and is a substitute for a VG 220 commercial gear oil with a mineral base. Arol P220 fulfils the most important requirements of the domestic standard PN-C-96056:1990 concerning the physico-chemical characteristic and tribological performance. However, greater and greater attention is being put on other properties not included in the mentioned standard. They are friction, resistance of gears to scuffing under severe conditions, resistance of gears to pitting and micropitting, fatigue life of rolling elements of bearings, gear vibrations, thermo-oxidative stability of the oil after long-lasting gear experiments, and physico-chemical oil stability during a long-lasting storage. This is why a number of additional tests were performed – four-ball tests (pure sliding and rolling contacts), gear tests and physico-chemical analyses. The ecological oil and its commercial, mineral equivalent were compared. Standardised and the author's test methods were carried out, not included in the PN-C-96056:1990 standard. The results show that Arol P220 reduces friction and improves the resistance of gears to micropitting compared with the mineral oil. Under conditions of dip lubrication (the gear pitting tests), the ecological oil reduces the level of vibrations in comparison with the mineral oil, but during the gear micropitting tests (spray lubrication) a reverse trend is observed. However, there are significant drawbacks to the ecological oil. They are the unfavourable change (drop) in the viscosity index during long-lasting storage, worse thermo-oxidative stability (much viscosity rise) after the gear experiments, and a drop in the resistance of gears to scuffing under very large loads. The worst drawback is a significant acceleration of pitting of bearing balls. When removal of these drawbacks appears impossible, they can be partly compensated by a shorter time of storage and exploitation of the ecological oil and using it for lubrication of gears working under moderate conditions.
Jednym z istotnych problemów współczesnej tribologii jest różnicowanie olejów smarowych o wysokich właściwościach przeciwzatarciowych (EP – extreme-pressure). Przykładem takich olejów są samochodowe oleje przekładniowe wysokich klas jakości – API GL-3 do GL-5. W artykule przedstawiono nową metodę rozróżniania właściwości takich olejów, a przez to ich jakościowego klasyfikowania, zwaną "metodą zacierania szokowego" i oznaczoną symbolem S-A10/16,6R/120. Dotyczy badań z wykorzystaniem testowej przekładni zębatej i została opracowana w Gear Research Center (FZG) Uniwersytetu w Monachium. Do badań wykorzystano stanowisko przekładniowe o symbolu T-12U, opracowane i wytwarzane w ITeE – PIB.

Nowadays, one of the important current problems of tribology is differentiating between oils of high EP (extreme-pressure) properties. Examples of such oils are automotive gear oils of high performance levels API GL-3 to GL-5. The author presents a new test method intended for differentiating between such oils from the point of view of their API performance level. The method is called "scuffing shock test" and denoted as S-A10/16,6R/120. It concerns gear testing and has been developed in the Gear Research Centre (FZG) at the Technical University of Munich. The shock test is carried out under much severer conditions (reduced face width, double rotational speed, higher initial temperature of the tested oil, reverse sense of rotations) than the most often employed FZG gear scuffing test denoted as A/8,3/90. Unlike the other FZG gear scuffing tests, in which the load is increased in stages from the lowest value, in S-A10/16,6R/120 test the expected failure load is applied to an unused gear flank, hence the name "shock test". This prevents the test gears from running-in and in turn increases their susceptibility to scuffing. The shock test has been verified using a series of automotive gear oils of the following API performance levels: GL-3, GL-4, GL-4/5, GL-5 and GL-5(LS). For reference, API GL-1 gear oils, showing the poorest performance, were also tested. A test rig denoted as T-12U, designed and manufactured by ITeE-PIB in Radom, was used. It has been shown that the shock test makes it possible to differentiate between automotive gear oils of API GL-3 performance level and oils of higher levels. Although it is impossible to differentiate between automotive gear oils of the highest specifications (GL-4, GL-4/GL-5, GL-5), one can distinguish between oils belonging to the same performance level. What is particularly important is that none of the tested oil exhibited the failure load stage (being a measure of EP properties of oils tested) higher than 11. This implies that the test conditions in the shock test are severe enough to differentiate between modern automotive gear oils. The presented gear scuffing shock test can be implemented in the R&D laboratories of the petroleum industry, but also in the laboratories of the R&D centres devoted to surface engineering and engineering of advanced materials intended for modern toothed gears.
W artykule przedstawiono nowy aparat czterokulowy, opracowany w ramach zadania realizowanego w Programie Wieloletnim PW-004 pn. Zaprezentowano genezę tematu, budowę i charakterystykę techniczną nowego aparatu, realizowane metody badawcze, przedstawiono wybrane wyniki badań weryfikacyjnych, potencjalne obszary zastosowania oraz pierwsze wdrożenia.

The authors present a new four-ball machine developed within the scope of the Multi-Year Programme PW-004 "Development of innovative systems of manufacturing and maintenance 2004-2008", coordinated by the Institute for Sustainable Technologies - National Research Institute in Radom. The main difference between the new device and the ones having been manufactured by ITeE - PIB so far is related to a significant improvement of the research capabilities. The previously manufactured four-ball machine, known as T-02 tribotester, was intended for testing antiwear (AW) and extreme-pressure (EP) properties of lubricants. Another four-ball tribotester, denoted as T-03, was intended only for determination of the surface fatigue life. Neither T-02, nor T-03 machine made it possible to perform runs at an increased and controlled lubricant temperature. The new machine, denoted as T-02U, enables the user to perform all the mentioned tests, both for lubricants and engineering materials. A genesis of the idea of the new four-ball machine, its main units, technical specifications, realized test methods, chosen results of verification testing, potential areas of application, as well as first implementations in industrial and scientific laboratories, are presented.
Do badań wytypowano trzy rodzaje powłok typu DLC: a-C:H:W, a-C:Cr i a-C:H. Powłoka a-C:H:W została osadzona metodą PVD (Physical Vapour Deposition) z wykorzystaniem reaktywnego rozpylania magnetronowego. Powłoka a-C:Cr. o dominującym udziale struktury sp2, została osadzona w procesie CFUBMSIP (Closed Field Unbalanced Magnetron Sputter Ion Plating). Powłokę a-C:H o znacznym udziale struktury węgla sp2 osadzono na warstwie Cr, z międzywarstwą z CrC. Powlekanie przeprowadzono w procesie PECVD (Plasma Enhanced Chemical Vapour Deposition). Uzyskane wyniki odniesiono do wyników badań kół stalowych smarowanych olejem przekładniowym (klasy GL-5 wg API) z pełnym pakietem dodatków. Wyniki przeprowadzonych badań dowodzą, że istnieje możliwość przeniesienia niektórych funkcji środków smarowych na powłoki przeciwzużyciowe. Dodatkowym efektem zastosowania powłoki węglowej a-C:H:W na powierzchnie robocze kół zębatych smarowanych olejem ekologicznym, było obniżenie temperatury pracy węzła tarcia (o ok. 20°C) i zmniejszenie oporu ruchu - wzrost sprawności (o ok. 20%).

The objective of the study was the investigation of the effect of DLC coatings deposited by vacuum methods on scuffing resistance of coated gears. Three kinds of DLC coatings were tested: a-C:H:W, a-C:Cr and a-C:H. The a-C:H:W coating was deposited by PVD method (Physical Vapour Deposition) with reactive magnetron sputtering. The a-C:Cr coating, with dominating sp3 structure was deposited in CFUBMSIP process (Closed Field Unbalanced Magnetron Sputter Ion Plating). The a-C:H coating with dominating sp3 structure was deposited in PECVD process (Plasma Enhanced Chemical Vapour Deposition). The gear tests were preformed using FZG A/8.3/90 method, employing T-12U testing fig. The tests were done for DLC coated gears and for uncoated gears. The gears were lubricated with eco-oil. The obtained results were compared to results achieved for steel uncoated gears lubricated with high performance gear oil with full package of additives (GL-5 performance level according to API). The performed results indicate that under extreme-pressure conditions DLC coating can take over the functions of AW/EP additives. For the a-C:H:W coated gears lubricated with ecological oil the oil temperature was lower by 20°C, and the friction was lowered by 20% than those achieved for uncoated steel gears lubricated with high performance GL-5 gear oil.
