Compressive strength of slender steel beams with high strength steel

A review of the current methodologies for the evaluation of the compressive strength of slender steel beams is presented. Following a companion publication on the shear buckling resistance of webs, special attention is given both to stiffened and unstiffened webs in compression. A parametric study is performed to assess the range of validity of the various procedures across the various standard steel grades as well as the newest higher strength steel grades. An illustrative design example is presented.

Przedstawiono przegląd współczesnych metod oceny wytrzymałości na ściskanie smukłych belek stalowych. Szczególną uwagę zwrócono na zagadnienia ściskania żeber usztywnionych i swobodnych. Przedstawiono sprawdzenie rozmaitych procedur obliczeniowych w odniesieniu do zwykłych stali oraz stali wysokowytrzymałych.

The final approval of the Eurocodes by CEN is quickly approaching. Although a great number of parts and annexes are already approved and ratified as European Prestandards, code drafting work is still under way with the continuous publication of additional parts. The evaluation of the shear buckling resistance of plate girders has been the object of some controversy in recent years given the goal to achieve a common procedure for unstiffened and stiffened webs that encompasses the practice in all member countries of CEN. The publication within Part 1.5 of Eurocode 3 of a new procedure for the evaluation of the shear buckling resistance of webs while two other procedures were already in use for unstiffened and transversely stiffened webs in Part 1.1 raised the need to compare all available methods. A review and parametric study is herein presented.

Ocena stateczności przy ścinaniu dźwigarów powierzchniowych stanowi przedmiot dyskusjii naukowych, których celem jest ustalenie procedury obliczania żeber swobodnych i usztywnionych. W pracy przedstawiono przegląd metod obliczeniowych, propopnowanych w Eurokodzie, dotyczących odporności na wyboczenia przy ścinaniu dźwigarów powierzchniowych. Przedstawiono także analizę parametryczną.
