The paper presents the known causes of shrinkage in cement composites. The history of usage of concrete additives is also shortly discussed. A method used to research the shrinkage of mortars and the composition of the tested samples is presented and the results of research are shown in the graphs. The studies confirmed that the chemical admixture type has a direct effect on the size of the linear changes in the mortars.

Chemical transformation of leather waste into chromium free biomass has been investigated. The conversion was performed by extracting the toxic metal. The effects of several influential factors on the process have been studied using design of experiments. Optimal conditions of chromium extraction have been determined. The collagen fiber of the biomass obtained has been analyzed by the Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The chemical mechanism allowing this transformation has been suggested. The infrared analysis showed that the collagen fiber of the obtained biomass presents chemical composition similar to that of native collagen fiber of non-chromed leather. These results demonstrated the almost complete extraction of chromium from leather waste and the conversion of these latter into an environmentally harmless biomass.

Wzmacnianie mostów sklepionych z użyciem blach falistych może być efektywnym sposobem rewitalizacji starych obiektów murowanych. Zaletą przedstawianej technologii jest niewielka ingerencja w dotychczasowy układ konstrukcyjny mostu, a przede wszystkim możliwość wykonywania prac budowlanych przy czynnym (czasem ograniczonym) ruchu na obiekcie. W przypadku murowanych sklepień o zaawansowanej degradacji materiału wskazane jest poszerzenie obiektu w celu nadania mu nowej estetycznej elewacji. Zaletą wzmacniania sklepienia z zastosowaniem blachy falistej jest niewielka redukcja przestrzeni pod mostem, a przy tym znaczny przyrost nośności użytkowej.
