The paper presents the results of research aimed at preliminary analysis of the students’ assessment of environmental conditions in selected university buildings in Poland. The study was conducted using questionnaires designed for this study. The questionnaire-based interviews were conducted in five university buildings in a few academic centres; the respondents were students attending classes in the buildings (N = 184) under study. The data were analysed both quantitatively and qualitatively with the use of behavioural mapping and space syntax analysis. The research results indicated students’ behavioral and emotional engagement with the places of study, their assessment of the functional performance of these facilities and proposals for improvement of the existing environment (in particular the creation of individual learning space and the “student space” in general), as well as the emotionally-charged and personalized image of individual buildings. Theoretical introduction into the subject matter of research is the paper „Space for university students: specific requirements for environment - theoretical approach”.

The paper presents a humanistic approach in investigation of people-environment relations within university buildings. Architecture of the university buildings is considered to be a learning environment from the position of “critical pedagogy of place”. It emphasizes the importance of the place itself expressed by the specific link between building and its location understood mainly in environmental terms - not only as a functional node but also as a vital element of cultural and also natural environment (sustainable development). It also presents some of the contemporary research on learning environment focused on the topic of students’ engagement - influencing learning success, and its multiple relation with university building facilities and architecture. The theoretical considerations are illustrated by some examples of university buildings from US. The paper is a theoretical introduction to the following paper: “Students’ assessment of environmental conditions in university buildings - the research report”, which describes the method and results of research (by the same author) proceeded in a few Polish university buildings.

W artykule przedstawiono opis metodologiczny i przykładowe wyniki własnych badań nad zastosowaniem kombinacji argumentacji logicznej i metod jakościowych w diagnozie środowiska architektonicznego. Opisywane metody, w tym zwłaszcza analiza rozkładu przestrzeni (analiza planu, space-syntax) i mapowanie behawioralne zostały przedstawione w szerszym kontekście metod stosowanych w architekturze i w badaniach relacji człowiek–środowisko.

Paper presents the methodology and samples of research on using the combination of logical argumentation and qualitative methods in diagnosis of the built environment. The ways of using the spacesyntax analysis as an example of logical argumentation and behavioral mapping as a demonstration of qualitative research were presented in the context of a wide range of architectural research methods as well as manenvironment methods.

Content available remote Strategy of placemaking – an essay on Seattle architecture
EN
The following article concerns planning policy in Seattle, whose important element is the strategy of placemaking. Place-oriented thinking is expressed with a polycentric understanding of city space (as a sum of places), but also an organic view of all of the city’s components: architecture, history, natural and cultural environment. Development of this strategy (topics of projects, methods of projecting, public involvement) is described by an outline of the history of city planning and chosen examples of contemporary urban projects in terms of public space (parks, museums, a library).

W artykule przedstawiono politykę planistyczną Seattle, której ważnym elementem jest strategia tworzenia miejsc. Myślenie miejscem wyraża się policentrycznym rozumieniem miejskiej przestrzeni (jako sumy miejsc), ale też organicznym ujmowaniem wszystkich komponentów miejsca: architektury, historii, środowiska naturalnego i kulturowego. Rozwój tej strategii (tematy projektów, metody projektowe, publiczne zaangażowanie) opisują zarys historii miejskiego planowania oraz wybrane przykłady współczesnych miejskich projektów z zakresu przestrzeni publicznych (parki, muzea, biblioteka).
