Nowadays great importance is placed just to carry out tests on materials. Implementation the test is of great importance in determining the properties of materials, such as physical and mechanical as well as other side to check when comparing these characteristics with other materials. Test result may also be determine the optimal area, ext. conditions in which the tested material will work. For the implementation the test is necessary to have designed and constructed a test system, which can be used to establish material properties. There are many kinds and types of tests to test systems used. Therefore, this contribution deals with the design of the test system, the very principle of testing in high vacuum. The vacuum is being used increasingly not only in laboratory instruments, but also in various production processes and applications.

Chosen techniques in the context of surface topography measurement are described. The technical details and measurements of the device followed by several examples of its applications are then discussed. The main measurable parameters are the volume of material removed by wear and the surface area of the wear track. Both two-dimensional analysis of profiles and three-dimensional analysis of surface topography maps can be used to assess wear damage.
