During hydroprocessing of petroleum residue asphaltenes undergo conversion which may lead to the formation of unstable products. The effect of the hydrodesulfurization process (H-Oil) on the amt. And compound of asphaltenes as well as on their stability in the residue was investigated. The Heithaus method was used to determine the peptizability of asphaltenes (pa) and the overall compatibility of residuum (P). It was shown that hydroconversion decreased the resins to asphaltenes ratio; this may deteriorate the stability of the residue as a result of the decrease in the peptizability of asphaltenes. The comparison of the Heithaus parameter values, pa and P, for the feedstock and heavy product of hydrodesulfurization revealed a decrease in the stability of the residue during hydroprocessing.
