The „Bionic Sonar” project, phase one: Initial research on Marine Mammal Acoustics

Results of theoretical and experimental investigation on marine mammal acoustics are presented and briefly concluded. The described research is a part of interdisciplinary scientific project titled „Bionic Sonar”. The goal of the project is to develop a new kind of hydroacoustic sources with specified frequency characteristics and directivity patterns, inspired by the vocal and echolocation systems of the marine mammals. The presented theoretical investigation focuses on underwater communication and navigation capabilities of dolphins and grey seals. The experimental research concerning underwater vocalizations of the grey seals was performed in the Hel Marine Station of the Institute of Oceanography of the University of Gdańsk. Underwater sounds were recorded using hydrophones placed in the pools in which only the grey seals were present. The recorded vocalizations have been extracted from the recordings and analyzed for a number of distinguishing characteristics. The obtained results are compared to the results of other related investigations described in literature.

Zaproponowana w pracy tania i prosta metoda prac terenowych i opracowania wyników pomiaru daje możliwości fotogrametrycznej inwentaryzacji zabytków polskiej prowincji. Oparta jest ona na wykorzystaniu do rejestracji amatorskich, cyfrowych aparatów fotograficznych o wyznaczonych parametrach kalibracji. Nie wymaga umiejętności wykonywania zdjęć stereoskopowych, a co z tym idzie - w późniejszym opracowaniu nie jest wymagany sprzęt umożliwiający przestrzenną obserwację w celu pomiaru zdjęć. Zaproponowana technologia została sprawdzona w wykonaniu trójwymiarowej fotogrametrycznej rekonstrukcji drewnianego zabytkowego młyna w Raciborowicach koło Krakowa. Do opracowania zdjęć, kalibracji aparatu, wykonania obliczeń i sporządzenia wirtualnego modelu obiektu pokrytego rastrem wykorzystano oprogramowanie Orpheus.

A cheap and simple method of terrain measurements and elaboration of measurement results described in this paper gives possibilities of photogrammetric recording of historical objects located at Polish countryside. It is based on the usage of calibrated amateur digital cameras. This method doesn't require any skills in shooting stereoimages, therefore, in further elaborations, the equipment for 3D observations and measurements is not needed. The proposed technology was tested by performing 3D photogrammetric restitution of an ancient wooden mill in Raciborowice, near Cracow. For further measuring images, camera calibration, calculation and bundle adjustment, costruction 3D model filled by raster images, the Orpheus software was used.
