Frontal analysis has been used to determine isotherms for adsorption of methanol from the vapour phase by the surface of Si 100 silica gel chemically bonded to 2.95 μmol m–2 aniline groups. The retention of aliphatic hydrocarbons on this packing material was also measured. It was found that as the extent of dehydroxylation of the column packing surface increases, the retention times of chromatographed hydrocarbons decrease, as does the selectivity of the packing.
