The paper presents what was done at the Heating Plant EKOTERM at Żywiec (Poland) for energy efficient use of electricity. In 1986 a new boiler house "Pod Grapą" started running. The project of the plant and following the equipment were to large for that time and for future heat demands. A number of actions were done to decrease the electricity usage per one unit (GJ) of produced and delivered heat. The reduction of the network pressure by the way of replacing of exploited electric motors (into motors of lower rotation speed) and than by an exchange of pumps and using frequency converters for all main drives (pumps, fans) caused large electricity savings. At the beginning of exploitation of the Heating Plant the heat production required 17 kWh/GJ, while after the modernisation only 4.5 kWh/GJ are necessary. The payback of the modernisation is estimated as 1.3 year.

Scentralizowane ciepłownictwo istnieje w Żywcu od roku 1996. Obecne zapotrzebowanie mocy cieplnej wynosi: 42,586 MW, średnie 41,033 MW, w tym na c.o. 39,533 MW i c.w.u. 3,035 MW. Struktura zużycia energii cieplnej przedstawia się następująco: przemysł - 8,9 MW, spółdzielnie mieszkaniowe - 14,8 MW, gospodarka mieszkaniowa - 7,5 MW, oświata, służba zdrowia i inne -9,7 MW. Zadania modernizacyjno-rozwojowe sprowadzają się do: rozbudowy magistrali zasilanych z kotłowni rejonowej, modernizacji eksploatowanych sieci, budowy nowych przyłączy i węzłów cieplnych.

Central heating in Żywiec has existed since 1996. Presently the heat demand is 42.586 MW, average 41.033 MW, in that central heating - 39.533 MW and useful hot water 3.035 MW. The structure of thermal energy consumption is the following: industry - 8.9 MW, housing estates - 14.8 MW, housing -7.5 MW, education, medical services, etc. - 9.7 MW. The modernisation and development activities should cover the following aspects: development of the main routes fed by the regional boiler room, modernisation of the exploited network, construction of new offsprings and heat.
