One of the simplest device realisations of the calssic particle-in-the-box problem of basic quantum mechanics is the quantum well infrared photodetector (QWIP). In this paper we discuss the effect of focal plane array non-uniformity on the performance, optimisation of the detector design, material growth and processing that has culminated in realisation of large format long-wavelength QWIP cameras, holding forth great promise for many applications in 6-18 micron wavelength range in science, medicine, defence and industry. In addition, we present the recent developments in long-wavelength/very long-wavelength dualband QWIP imaging camera for various applications.

Dynamiczny rozwój sieci Internet powoduje przeciążenie publicznych sieci telekomunikacyjnych. W firmie Alcatel opracowano 3-fazową strategię modernizacji i przebudowy central telefonicznych Alcatel 1000 S12 w uniwersalne systemy komunikacyjne odpowiednie do budowy wąsko- i szerokopasmowych sieci dostępowych o dużej pojemności. Do sieci dostępowej mają być masowo wprowadzone techniki ISDN i ADSL.

Rapid development of Internet results in overload of existing publictelephone networks. Alcatel has developed a 3-phase strategy for update and extension of Alcatel 1000 switching system into an versatile system suitable for implementation of both narrowband and broadband high performance access networks. Access networks will be based on massive deploymant of ISDN i ADSL technologies.
