Z okazji jubileuszu odzyskania niepodległości artykuł przypomina postaci polskich inżynierów górniczych, uczestników zmagań o suwerenną Ojczyznę. Niektórzy walczyli o niepodległość z bronią w ręku, po czym podjęli trud integrowania i modernizacji przemysłu wydobywczego. Ważną rolę odgrywała grupa absolwentów Akademii Górniczej w Leoben z przełomu XIX i XX w., którzy brali czynny udział w procesie industrializacji ziem polskich. W wolnym już kraju pracowali w różnych gałęziach górnictwa, by potem doznać goryczy okupacyjnej klęski i poniewierki. Pozostali jednak wierni ideałom patriotycznym przyswojonym w leobeńskim stowarzyszeniu studenckim. Nierzadko, zaniedbując prywatne interesy, poświęcili się służbie dla kopalni i z determinacją starali się poprawić warunki pracy górników. Więzy koleżeństwa, przyjaźni i korporacyjnej solidarności pomagały im przetrwać ciężkie chwile.

On the anniversary of Poland reclaiming independence, the article commemorates the Polish mining engineers who partook in the struggle for a free motherland. Many of them fought for independence with a gun in hand and afterwards participated in the effort to integrate and modernise the mining industry. A key role was played by the graduates of the Mining Academy in Leoben at the turn of the 20th century. They actively took part in the industrialisation process on the Polish land. After the country was freed they worked in various branches of the mining industry only to feel the bitterness of German occupation and ill-treatment shortly after. They, however, remained faithful to their patriotic ideals they had learnt in the Leoben student association. Often, neglecting their personal interest, they sacrificed themselves in service of the mine and were determined to improve the working conditions of the miners. The bonds of camaraderie, friendship and corporate solidarity allowed them to survive those difficult times.

Zdzisław Kamiński (1862-1920) był wśród polskich inżynierów górniczych przełomu XIX i XX wieku postacią nietuzinkową. W eseju ukazane są jego dokonania na polu poezji i literatury. Jest to obecnie pisarz zapomniany, jednak specjalistyczne bibliografie literackie wymieniają go jako współpracownika licznych czasopism i autora wierszy i nowel, poświęconych życiu górników. W eseju omówione zostały przede wszystkim dwa utwory: wspomnienia o pionierskim okresie działalności stowarzyszenia polskich studentów w Akademii Górniczej w Leoben oraz najsłynniejsza z jego nowel, zatytułowana W podziemiach. Akcja noweli luźno nawiązuje do tragicznej katastrofy w kopalni węgla kamiennego w Karwinie w 1894 roku.

Zdzisław Kamiński (1862-1920) was a unique character among the Polish mining engineers at the turn of the 19th and 20th century. This paper is an overview of his achievements in the fields of poetry and literature. Currently, he is a forgotten writer but specialist literary bibliographies feature him as an associate of numerous periodicals and an author of many poems and novels dedicated to the life of miners. The paper focuses primarily on two works. The first one is a memoir of the daily lives of Polish students at the Mining Academy in Leoben. The second one is the most famous of his novels entitled „W podziemiach” (“Underground”). The plot loosely relates to the real-life catastrophe in the coal mine which took place in Karwina in 1894.
