The Upper Carboniferous polymictic Balinka Conglomerate was deposited along the western margin of the Boskovice Basin (eastern part of the Bohemian Massif). Angular aggregates of deep-green chromium-rich interstratified clay mineral R1-illite(0.8)/smectite (I/S) are present exclusively in the basal part of this unit. The textural position of chromium-bearing I/S (0.77–2.88 wt.% Cr2O3; 0.040–0.153 apfu Cr) in the conglomerate matrix indicates a genetic link with the highly altered chromium spinel, which is preserved in the relics. The source of Cr-rich spinelides was serpentinized peridotites in the adjacent Moldanubicum (Gföhl Unit). The formation of I/S is related to diagenetic processes in the conglomerate matrix. The fluids would have relatively high fugacity of CO2 and activity of K+. K/Ar ages of 284.1 ± 7.7 and 276.3 ± 7.4 Ma (lower Permian – Kungurian/Artinskian age) confirmed the diagenetic origin of this I/S.

The SW margin of the Zavkhan terrane is significant for research on Paleozoic amalgamation of the Central Asian Orogenic Belt (CAOB). The study area is located in the western part of the Khasagt Mountains, western Mongolia. We present a new preliminary K-Ar dating of metasedimentary rocks from the Yargait Formation which were deformed during collision of the Zavkhan terrane with the Lake Zone terrane. Our results include two dating that are similar to earlier data by other authors (Stípskáetal., 2010; Bold et al., 2016b). The first dating equal to 544.1 ±13.7 Ma can be interpreted as the age ofmetamorphism and the subduction of the SW margin ofthe Zavkhan terrane under the Lake Zone terrane during the late Ediacaran-early Cambrian. The second dating of 441.1 ±11.7 Ma indicates the Late Ordovician - Silurian regional extension event.

A series of laboratory experiments was performed to determine the carbon stable isotopic composition of different combustion/pyrolysis (B/P) products. Variation in the δ13C values of the products was observed, up to 4‰. The differences in the carbon isotopic compositions of the B/P products were dependent on temperature, time and wood type. Comparison of the results for fresh and fossil oak wood suggested that the δ13C differences were the effect of selective decomposition of some wood components during the fossilization process. The temperature dependence of the carbon isotopic composition was linked to variation in the carbon isotopic composition of the main wood components, which each had different levels of thermal stability. Isotopes exchange reactions in between different products can be also considered as possible source of variation of δ13C on temperature. Both these hypotheses were supported by molecular simulations of cellulose and lignin B/P. The results confirm that B/P should be treated as a continuous process, where the results depend on the degree of process development. Natural burning processes are dynamic and burning conditions change rapidly and it is necessary to take care when using combustion products as a paleoenvironmental proxy or as an isotopic characteristic for the identification of source material.
