Analysis of Woven Fabric at the Place of the Sewn Seam

Key importance and the role of sewn seam in the woven fabric are presented. Fabric properties in the places joined with the sewn seam on which garment durability, applicability, appearance and quality depend are highlighted. Seam location is usually the weakest spot on the garment, especially when the great loads are present at these places. Mechanical properties of the sewn fabrics were investigated in different test conditions. The influence of the load on the sewn seam is analyzed in time intervals. Sample with seam have approximately 70% lower breaking properties (breaking force and elongation at break) than the sample without seam. By preloading the seam fabrics with 30%, 50% and 70% of elongation at break, for a 3-h period, the effect on mechanical properties were tested and the differences in pre-stretching intensity were observed. By conducting such test, it is expected that the fabric experience further degradation and that breaking properties further reduce, but the exact opposite occurred (breaking properties, by increasing the preload, increase even more), because of various material properties (structural fabric properties, raw material characteristics, seam characteristics).

The interior design of motor vehicles depends mostly on the appearance and properties of fabric with prevailing woven articles. When upholstering motor vehicle seats and interiors, fabrics mostly constitute the exterior part of these interiors, as so-called original covers. These fabrics belong to the group of technical textiles featuring exceptionally high tenacity, elasticity, porosity and resistance to abrasion, fire and sunlight, as well as other properties necessary for this type of fabric. Airbag fabrics are of great importance because the safety of the passengers involved in an accident greatly depends on their properties and cutting forms. These fabrics should also possess certain properties such as minimal air permeability and exceptionally high tenacity achieved by the fibre raw material composition, processing procedures, fabric construction parameters and qualitatively joined places. Besides interior design and airbag fabrics, fabrics used for making seat belts are also of great importance. These fabrics are specifically manufactured on narrow fabric weaving machines. They feature high tenacity, stability achieved by a specially selected yarn and fabric construction parameters as well as by form and length, which are essential for correct bodily posture in the case of a possible accident.

Projektowanie wnętrza pojazdów samochodowych zależy głównie od ich przewidywanego wyglądu i właściwości stosowanych materiałów, przeważnie tkanin. Materiały stosowane we wnętrzach samochodów stanowią grupę tekstyliów technicznych, które powinny charakteryzować się dużą wytrzymałością ,elastycznością, porowatością, oraz odpornością na ścieranie, działanie ognia, światła słonecznego, oraz innymi właściwościami niezbędnymi związanymi z ich różnorodnym zastosowaniem. Bardzo ważna jest konstrukcja tkanin stosowanych na poduszki powietrzne bo od tego zależy życie ludzkie. Te materiały powinny posiadać minimalną przepuszczalność powietrza, wyjątkowo dużą wytrzymałość osiągniętą przez stosowanie odpowiednich zestawień włókien, odpowiednią ich obróbkę oraz wysokiej jakości łączenia płatów tkanin. Oprócz siedzeń samochodowych, wykładzin wnętrza tkaniny są stosowane również do produkcji pasów bezpieczeństwa. Te tkaniny muszą być wyprodukowane na specjalnych krosnach o małej szerokości i charakteryzować się dużą wytrzymałością i stabilnością uzyskiwanymi dzięki specjalnie wyselekcjonowanym przędzom i doborze parametrów konstrukcyjnych tkanin.
