The city is a multilayered structure composed from multiple pieces, each of which has been subjected to the individual influence of history and changes of time. The city is a game board where architects play at refilling empty fragments. The rules of the game allow geometric deformations of space, in order to establish the context of the concealed history of the place. The goal of the game is to bring what is most valuable and precious from the existing urban structure, or build a new value that will last the test of time.

Miasto to wielowarstwowa struktura, złożona z wielu fragmentów, z których każdy ulegał indywidualnym wpływom historii i przemianom w czasie. Miasto to plansza do gry, na której architekci bawią się w uzupełnianie pustych fragmentów. Reguły gry pozwalają na geometryczne deformacje przestrzeni, w celu nawiązania kontekstu do skrywanej historii miejsca. A celem gry jest wydobycie z istniejącej tkanki urbanistycznej tego, co wartościowe i cenne, lub zbudowanie nowej wartości, która przetrwa próbę czasu.

Starość niesie za sobą problemy: samotność, wykluczenie społeczne, problemy zdrowotne i ekonomiczne, bariery architektoniczne do pokonania, nieprzystosowane przestrzenie, a w nich nieprzystosowani ludzie. Jednymi z głównych problemów są jakość życia osób starszych, często niski standard mieszkaniowy oraz niewystarczająca liczba domów seniora i różnych form mieszkaniowych z zapewnieniem opieki. W dzisiejszej sytuacji niedostatecznej ilości wiedzy pozwalającej określić, co jest dobrym przykładem mieszkalnictwa dla osób starszych, łatwo jest wyciągnąć błędne lub mylące wnioski z istniejących praktyk. Pragnąc wyłonić pożądane cechy form mieszkaniowych i spojrzeć głębiej w mieszkaniową przyszłość seniorów, podjęto próbę wyłonienia istotnych trendów wpływających na kształtowanie się i rozwój środowiska zamieszkiwania dla starszej generacji oraz czynników przyczyniających się do zmian preferowanych usług społecznych i wymogu opieki.

Old age deals with such problems: loneliness, social exclusion, health and economic issues, architectural barriers to overcome, unsuitable spaces and maladjusted people in them. One major problem is the quality of life of older people and often low standard of housing, and also an insufficient number of nursing homes and various forms of housing for seniors, with the provision of continuous care. In the current situation of insufficient knowledge allowing to determine what is a good example of housing for the elderly, it is easy to draw erroneous or misleading conclusions from existing practices. Wishing to emerge desired features of forms of housing and look deeper into the future of housing for seniors, the author attempted to identify important trends affecting the formation and development of living environment for older generation, as well as factors contributing to changes in preferred social services and health care requirement.

Każdy fragment miasta jest zaledwie jednym z wielu elementów złożonej struktury. Każde miejsce ulegało indywidualnym wpływom historii i przemianom w czasie, a te kształtowały jego obecny charakter. Pozostałe resztki historii, te które przetrwały próbę czasu, są odbiciem, cieniem tego, co już przeminęło, są duchem miejsca ukrytym w starych budynkach, ich fragmentach czy pod postacią historycznego układu ulic i placów.

Each fragment of the city is just one of many elements of complex structure. Each place has individual history and has been changing over time, shaping its present character. Remaining elements of history are a shadow of what has already passed, are the spirit of place hidden in old buildings or in historical layout of streets and squares.

W obliczu rosnącej liczby osób starszych w polskim społeczeństwie należy rozważyć stosowanie szczególnych rozwiązań architektoniczno-budowlanych, które zniwelują problemy, jakie napotykają seniorzy w codziennym życiu. Należy zwrócić uwagę na warunki życia ludzi starszych zamieszkujących samodzielnie, a także zamieszkujących w instytucjonalnych placówkach opieki, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem dostępności obiektów, warunków higieniczno-sanitarnych i akustycznych, oświetlenia, materiałów wykończeniowych, jakości powietrza i innych czynników wpływających na bezpieczeństwo i komfort użytkowania obiektów.

In the face of growing number of elderly in Polish society, we should consider the use of specific architectural and constructional solutions to remedy the problems encountered by seniors in their everyday lives. Attention should be paid to life conditions of older people living independently and those residing in the institutional care facilities, with particular attention to the accessibility, hygiene and sanitary conditions, acoustic, lighting, finishing materials, air quality and other factors affecting the safety and comfort of living in the buildings.
