Uzyskane wyniki badań upoważniają do następujących wniosków.

The study we conducted in laboratory conditions and two industrial plants. Personal Alternator Rating(PAR) of earplugs was measured with the use of a VeriPRO system developed by Howard Leight Honeywell Hearing Laboratory. Seven models of disposable and two models of reusable earplugs were tested. The aim of the laboratory study was to obtain man PAR values for tested models of brand new samples when they were properly fitted in ear canals. The measurements were carried on with 16 trained subjects who were instructed how to correctly insert earplug; in ear canals. In industrial plants, earplugs were tested with the participation of 152 workers, who inserted the earplugs as they do it usually on every working day. The general conclusion was that the main factors causing poor performance of earplugs were incorrect fitting of ear plugs in ear canals- incorrect inserting in the ear canal or wrong model selection In case of reusable earplugs a significant factor was their bad technical condition. Any quantitative rules were not observed. A global, statistical approach to the problem of earplugs attenuation in a real-world and recommendation for derating of the attenuation values measured in laboratories during the certification process is not reasonable.
Przedstawiono zastosowania systemu pomiarowego VeriPRO, opartego na subiektywnej metodzie wyrównywania głośności, do badań indywidualnego tłumienia wkładek przeciwhałasowych w warunkach laboratoryjnych i rzeczywistych.

The aim of this paper is to present application of the VeriPRO measurement system, based on the subjective equal-loudness method, for testing personal attenuation of ear-plugs in laboratories and real-world conditions. The laboratory tests were carried on with 16 trained listeners, the tests in working environment - with 152 workers. The results of the investigations show that the main reasons for the lack of expected protection of workers were incorrect way of wearing and bad technical condition of ear-plugs. The measurement results prove that the idea of the derating of laboratory data to get a real-world attenuation for ear-plugs is not legitymate.

This paper presents the methodology and the results of binaural measurements of exposure to noise for 91 industry workers wearing ear-muffs. The results revealed that 18.7% of the workers were exposed to noise of equivalent A-weighted sound pressure levels of over 80 dB(A) and 7.7% to levels of over 85 dB(A). The measured levels were compared with those calculated with the octave-band method according to Standard No. EN 458:2004. The differences ranged from – 3 dB(A) to 26.5 dB(A); their statistical distribution did not indicate any data which could suggest derating laboratory measurements. The main causes of exposure to noise higher by over 3 dB(A) than that theoretically predicted were the bad technical condition of ear-muffs (32.2% of the cases) and an incorrect way of wearing them (15.2%).
