Many terrestrial pollen profiles from Poland (and a few pollen records from other parts of Central Europe) show the end of the last interglacial (Eemian, MIS 5e) to have been characterized by climatic and environmental instability. This is expressed by a strong, rapid cooling in the middle part of the pine phase ending this interglacial (E7 regional pollen assemblage zone), and then a re-warming at the very end of this phase, immediately before the transition to the glacial conditions of the last glaciation (Vistulian, Weichselian, MIS 5d). We have characterized the regional distribution of these climatic fluctuations in Poland on the basis of isopollen maps prepared for the Eemian Interglacial based on palynological data from 31 Polish pollen profiles. These maps show unequivocally that the intra-interglacial cooling at the end of the Eemian Interglacial was a transregional phenomenon, which was reflected very clearly by a temporary openness of vegetation across the whole of Poland. It was associated with a distinct decrease in pine forest areas and an increase in birch forests and open communities of cold steppe type with a domination of Artemisia. The pronounced climate and environment instability during the last phase of the Eemian Interglacial may be consistent with it being a natural phenomenon, characteristic of transitional stages. Taking into consideration the currently observed global warming, coinciding with a natural cooling trend, the study of such transitional stages is important for understanding the underlying processes of climate change.

The Kubłowo site is situated in the southeastern Kujawy region, Central Poland, and slightly to the south of the limit of the Last GlacialMaximum (LGM) in the Vistula Lobe. Late Pleistocene lacustrine and peat deposits found there have been analyzed for their pollen content. The pollen sequence from Kubłowo records the longest continuous succession of vegetation covering the Eemian Interglacial, Early Vistulian and the lower part of the Plenivistulian in Central Poland. In the Early Vistulian two warm (Brörup and Odderade) and two cool(Herning and Rederstall) intervals have been distinguished. The next three climatic oscillations correspond to the Schalkholtz andEbersdorf stadials and to the Oerel Interstadial. The lack of till or till residua above the Eemian-Vistulian deposits at Kubłowo indicatesthis area as being beyond the extent of the last Scandinavian ice sheet which confirms the reconstruction of the LGM limit as based ongeomorphological evidence.

Osady organiczne wypełniające zagłębienie w stanowisku Folwark 93K zostały opracowane metodą analizy pyłkowej i okrzemkowej. Wyniki obu analiz wskazują, że akumulacja osadów zachodziła w interglacjale mazowieckim. Na podstawie zmian składu gatunkowego i relatywnej frekwencji (udziału procentowego) okrzemek, w badanych osadach wyróżniono siedem lokalnych poziomów okrzemkowych. Poziomy te reprezentują sukcesję okrzemek, na podstawie której scharakteryzowano cztery główne stadia rozwoju kopalnego jeziora w Folwarku, w nawiązaniu do wyników badań palinologicznych opisanych w sześciu lokalnych poziomach pyłkowych interglacjału mazowieckiego.

In the long sequence of Pleistocene events recorded in the Kleszczów Graben deposits, lacustrine sediments of the Mazovian Interglacial constitute an important member. Mazovian deposits were encountered in the Folwark 93K site. In the Folwark area, lacustrine sediments occurred in a syncline formed by an ice-sheet in a basal moraine till. The till was overlain by a sand layer deposited during a deglaciation period. Later, lacustrine accumulation was initiated at the beginning of the interglacial. The sequence of events recorded in the deposits indicates that the area of Central Poland already was glaciated before the Mazovian Interglacial. This conclusion contradicts the opinion that the warm period was separated from the previous interglacial by a cool period with an exclusively periglacial environment. Organic deposits, infilling the depression at the Folwark 93K site, were investigated by a pollen and diatom analysis. The results of the both the analyses indicate that accumulation of these deposits took place during the Mazovian Interglacial. According to changes in diatom composition and relative diatom frequency (percentage contribution of diatoms), seven local diatom assemblage zones were distinguished. These zones represent the diatom succession being the basis for characterisation of four main evolutionary phases of the ancient lake at Folwark, supported by the results of palynological investigations. The evolutionary phases of the Folwark lake were compared with development phases of the Adamówka lake (Sandomierz Basin), which is of the same age. The study also proved similarities in the development of these lakes to the lakes of the Likhvinian Interglacial in Russia and Alexandrian Interglacial in Belarus.

The thickness of Pleistocene deposits in the Kleszczów Graben reach 300 m. Data from these deposits are important for stratigraphic schemes of the Pleistocene of Poland. However, up to now the Mazovian Interglacial deposits were recognized from boreholes only, not from the exposures in the open-cast mine and they comprise incomplete interglacial successions. The present analysis of organic deposits from closed depression exposed on the escarpment of the mine, reveals almost the full pollen succession of the Mazovian Interglacial. The succession started with dominance of birch forest followed by birch-pine and afterwards birch-pine forest with increasing share of alder, spruce and thermophilous trees that led to development of mixed forest which corresponded to climatic interglacial optimum. First there were forests with share of yew which later were replaced by hornbeam and fir. The fir-hornbeam phase closed the climatic optimum. The distinctly colder pine phase following fir-hornbeam phase ended the interglacial succesion of plants in Folwark 93K site. On the basis of changes in diatom composition and relative (percentage) diatom frequency in this site it was determined that the fossil lake sediments represent the diatom succession of the Mazovian Interglacial. The diatom succession from Folwark has been divided into 7 local diatom assemblage zones (LDAZ Fd 1–Fd7). These zones represent four stages of paleolake development and correspond to the local and regional pollen assemblage zones of the Mazovian Interglacial. The Mazovian Interglacial age of the organic deposits from the site Folwark 93K implies the revision of the stratigraphical position of some lithostratigraphic units from the Middle Pleistocene in the Kleszczów Graben. The obtained results indicate also that at least some intensive deformations of the Lower Pleistocene deposits were completed before the Mazovian Interglacial.

The Łanięta site with fossil lake deposits is situated just in front of the maximum extent of Vistulian Glaciation ice. Palynological analysis shows that lake accumulation lasted through the Eemian Interglacial and almost the whole Early Vistulian, the longest record of this time interval in this part of Poland. Two warm interstadial-rank oscillations (Brörup and Odderade) and two stadials have been distinguished during the Early Vistulian. The older of these is correlated with the Herning Stadial while younger one equates with the Rederstal Stadial of the German succession.

Organic material that separates Odrian and Wartian complexes from Bełchatów which until now have been examined in a detailed way comes from fluvial deposits called the Chojny series. In the alluvium significant marks of erosion phases resulting in gaps in the organic sediments profiles are visible, which pose a question whether deposits from the climatic optimum were not removed by the erosion. Recently, lacustrine-boggy deposits called the Żłobnica series that lie in a similar stratigraphic position to the Chojny series have been found. They show features of more continuous organic deposition and could better serve to pinpoint the climate optimum. Palynological analyses of the Żłobnica series have demonstrated that the vegatation indicates an intersiadial character of that optimum.
