High magnetostriction Fe-Co-V alloy strips used in scale breakers were prepared by hot rolling process with the ingots which were made using the vacuum arc melting method. The effects of vanadium concentration on the DC magnetostriction behaviour and on the hot workability were investigated in the ternary Fe₅₀₋x-Co₅₀₋x-V₂x(0≤X≤5] system. The DC magnetostriction behaviour of an Fe₄₉Co₄₉V₂ alloy strp was compared with the AC magnetostriction in the presence of 60 Hz AC magnetic fields. The influance of stress on the AC magnetic behaviour of Fe₄₉Co₄₉V₂ alloy strips which were heat-treated at 750°C after hot rolling was investigated for both tensile and compressive stress. The amount of saturated magnetostriction (λs) isincreased by replacing cobalt and iron with vanadium in Fe₅₀Co₅₀ alloy, gut the hot workability of Fe-Co-V alloys restricts vanadium concentration to 2wt.% for industrial applications. The amount of AC magnetostriction for an Fe₄₉Co₄₉V₂ alloy strip was shown to be higher than the DC magnetostriction at the same magnetic field intensity and magnetosteiction was found to be higher in the presence of a compressive stress than in conditions of a tensile one.
