The paper is focused on the influence of different types of lubricants in cold flat rolling of an Al-alloy. A water-based synthetic lubricant, least detrimental from environmental point of view, is compared with a conventional mineral-based oil and an oil-in-water emulsion. As a reference no lubricant was utilised. Mean friction coefficients are evaluated from forward slip measurements utilising the Slab method and FEM. For analysing the bearing capacity of the lubricants, the experiments were carried out for different single pass reductions. The lowest values of the friction coefficient were obtained for the emulsion and the highest for the synthetic lubricant. The strip surfaces roughness was investigated before and after rolling. The best bearing capacity, i.e. the smallest increase in friction with reduction, and the lowest surface roughness was found for the synthetic "environmental friendly" lubricant.
