A methodology oflow pressure part turbine efficiency evaluation based on measurements of the steam flow parameters in the interspaces between neighbouring stages is described. Specially manufactured probes have been applied carry out such measurements. The efficiencies of the stages operating in the superheated steam zone result directly from experimental values of pressures, temperatures, and flow angles. To complete the efficiency evaluation for the stages operating in the wet steam region, a relevant estimation of blading system losses has been proposed and validated. This evaluation of losses is compatible with the measurement results. Adaptation of a comparative error analysis makes it possible to show the advantages of the methodology over the thermal balance applied during performance tests. The low pressure turbine efficiency evaluation methodology has been applied to numerous steam turbine power units of 200–500 MW output.

A new design of steam turbine stages upstream an extraction point is presented. In this solution a special ring guides the steam leakage flow directly to the heat exchanger. The experiments and calculations have confirmed advantages of the new design as manifested by turbine operating features and efficiency. The design has been applied in 30 old turbines with Baumann stages. Recently, the patent was used in the LP exit ND-41A of modernised 225 MW turbines in the Polaniec and Kozienice power plants.

The paper presents a methodology which has led to improvement of the turbine stage performance in the regenerative steam extraction chamber area by introducing a ring which collects the leakage flow from the gaps over unshrouded rotor blade tips and directs it to the extraction chamber. A comparison is made between the results obtained for the initial design (without a ring) and the design with the ring mounted. The results obtained for the construction were calibrated using the data measured on a real turbine in a Polish power plant.
This paper presents new solutions of turbine stages which have been applied to high-power steam turbine flow systems. The structures, elaborated in Poland, were designed with the use of the authors’ original computational software and verified by measurements performed on real turbine sets.
In this paper a problem is discussed of thermal degradation of shell-and-tube recuperative feed-water heaters due to heat transfer surface fouling. Application (to an example steam cycle of power plant) of DIAGAR software system intended for the analysing of impact of degradation of a particular heat exchanger on whole recuperative system performance, is presented. On the basis of the systematically performed simulative calculations it was concluded that the degradation of feed-water heaters of the lowest extraction pressure results in an additional load imposed on the heaters of higher extraction pressures, moreover it was estimated that the degradation of the heaters due to presence of sediments of the thermal resistance reaching 5*10-4 m2*K/W, has resulted in the drop of turbine set efficiency by about 0.3%. Such drop depends on a given configuration of degree of degradation of particular feed-water heaters applied in a considered turbine set.

The article presents the methodology of determining loss and flow rate coefficients, which are usually used in the process of steam turbine blading system design. In the article, the above flow coefficients were determined from CFD calculations based on the Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes equations and verified in experimental tests. The calculations were performed in steady-state and unsteady variants, differing by the relative rotor/stator motion being taken into account or not. Having been calculated in 3D, the flow coefficients were then incorporated in ID and 2D turbine design codes, which considerably shortened their calculation times, at the same time preserving their high accuracy.

W pracy przedstawiono analizę porównawczą strat przepływu przez stopnie turbinowe wyznaczonych w obliczeniach stacjonarnych i niestacjonarnych. Wykorzystane do porównań obliczenia zrealizowano przy pomocy kodu CFD FlowER. Zadanie rozdzielone zostało na dwie części. W pierwszej części dokonano testów weryfikacyjnych kodu, które wykonano w oparciu o pomiary stopni turbin modelowych. Wybrano najlepsze pod względem dokładności schematy numeryczne, dobrano wielkości siatek dyskretyzacyjnych oraz modele turbulencji. Pozwoliło to w drugiej części wykonać porównawcze obliczenia przepływu w układzie stacjonarnym i niestacjonarnym dla akcyjnych stopni turbinowych. Otrzymane wyniki i przeprowadzone analizy pozwoliły na ocenę stosowanych domknięć i przyjętych uproszczeń w zastosowaniu do obliczeń projektowych turbin parowych.

The paper presents the comparative analysis of flow losses in turbine stages based on steady and unsteady flow calculations. The calculations were performed using Flower, a specialized CFD code. First, verifications tests of the code were made. They allowed selecting a proper numerical scheme, grid size and turbulence model to obtain the best possible accuracy. Next, comparative calculations of stationary and nonstationary flow through a system of impulse steam turbine stages were done. The obtained results made the basis for estimating the correctness of closure; and simplifications applied in design calculations of steam turbines.

The paper discusses the possibilities of decreasing tip leakage losses in old-design turbines. Two methods of modification - stator blade leading edge cut and unceambered stator blade profile, where the blades of the downstream stator are modified near the tip to better fit to tip leakage flow from the preceding rotor - are presented here and investigated with the help of a CFD code. Changes in flow patterns are described. Also, possible efficiency gains from the applied modifications are estimated in the paper.
