Od przełomu XIX i XX w. obserwować można w architekturze europejskiej rozwój różnych idei łączących architekturę mieszkaniową i tereny zielone. Analizę idei i ich konfrontacji z miastem początków XXI wieku przeprowadzono na przykładzie Szczecina. Jego rozwój od lat 70. XIX wieku oparty był na realizacji nowych, autonomicznych osiedli, osadzonych w terenach zielonych. Jako reprezentatywne przykłady wybrano osiem zespołów mieszkaniowych: 1) West End i Neu West End – dzielnica z końca XIX wieku, 2) Ackermannshöhe – dzielnica z lat 10. XX w.; 3) osiedle robotnicze z przełomu lat 20. i 30. XX w.; 4) osiedle Stare Miasto z lat 50. XX wieku; 5) Śródmiejska Dzielnica Mieszkaniowa z lat 60. XX w., 6) prefabrykowane osiedle Słoneczne z lat 70. XX w., 7) osiedle Zielone Pole z lat 90. XX w.; 8) osiedle Magnolia z początku XXI wieku.

Since the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries we observed in Europe the evolution of various concepts of combining residential architecture and green areas. The analysis of those ideas and their confrontation with the early twenty-first century city was carried out on the example of Szczecin. Its development in the seventies of the nineteenth century was based on the implementation of new, autonomous housing estates located in green areas. Eight residential complexes were chosen as the representative examples: 1) West End and Neu West End – the end of the nineteenth century; 2) Ackermannshöhe – tens of the twentieth century; 3) Housing estate for workers – turn of the twenties and thirties of the twentieth century; 4) Housing estate Old City- fifties of the twentieth century; 5) City Center- sixties of the twentieth century; 6) Prefabricated housing estate Słoneczne- seventies of the twentieth century; 7) Housing estate Zielone Pole- nineties of the twentieth century; 8) Housing estate Magnolia- early twenty-first century.
