The elaborated in the Technical University of Wrocław biocompatibile porous corundum and porous - dense corundum layered composites, produced in the Institute of Glass and Ceramics in Warsaw, have been used in clinical practice in Poland for more than 20 years. These materials found its applications for filling the bone defects, bone cavities left after surgically removed neoplasmas etc., but they were not used in the area of joints. The presented study comprises the experiments carried out on sheep. The knee joint components were partially replaced by the dense-porous and porous corundum implants. The dense part of these implants had very carefully polished surface - they were inserted on the same level as the joint cartilage surface. The only porous implants used in this experiments had the surface few milimeters under the joint cartilage surface. After 2 years from the date of implantation the histological examination revealed that the dense - porous implants created a strong bond with bone tissue which penetrated into the implant pores. Its polished surface did not made any damages in the patella. The porous implants were as well penetrated by bone tissue which covered its surface. They also indicated recovery of the joint cartilage removed during implantation. The new joint cartilage located on the upper layer of the new bone had the same structure as the natural one. The received results of these investigations suggest the new possibilities of the operational treatment of knee joint damages.
