Wśród stosowanych wskaźników największą rolę mają wietrzeniowy wskaźnik Parkera (WIP) i chemiczny wskaźnik przemian (CIA), zatem im poświęcono najwięcej uwagi. W celu lepszego odzwierciedlenia intensywności wietrzenia stosowano dodatkowe wskaźniki, wrażliwe na najmniejsze zmiany geochemiczne. Obliczano wskaźnik Vogt’a (V), wskaźnik wietrzenia chemicznego Harnois’a (CIW) i wskaźnik przemian plagioklazów (PIA).

Chemical weathering indices are commonly used for characterizing weathering profiles and evaluating degree of weathering process. Their values allow to point at nonweathered source rock composition. Using study results of Odra and Warta drainage basin sediments, there was made a try to define variability of chemical indices in this country area. Among applied indices the most important role have Weathering Index of Parker (WIP) and Chemical Index of Alteration (CIA), thus them was given the most attention to. In order to better reflecting the intensity of weathering there were used additional indices, sensitive to the slightest geochemical changes. Vogt’s Residual Index (V), Chemical Index of Weathering (CIW) and Plagioclase Index of Alteration (PIA) were calculated. Study results let to evaluation the weathering intensity in the all study area and to indicate factors, which are in charge of this process. Lithology, climate, flow magnitude and region morphology have an influence on the values of weathering indices.

The research areas were selected in the regions heavily polluted by wastes from the former washing plant, flotation waste dump and by non-sulphide Zn-Pb ores from open pit mining in the Olkusz region. The submicroscopic phases occurring in the surface of plant roots and in the rhizospheres were investigated by XRD and SEM/EDS methods. Morphology of submicroscopic metalliferous phases and their manner of occurrence were the subject of study. The analysis of EDS spectra enabled to identify phases and mineral aggregates including Zn, Pb, Fe, Mn, Cd in their structure. The soils from the washing plant and areas of open pit exploitation are contaminated by diverse complexes of minerals. The occurrence of unstable Fe, Pb, Ca sulphates indicate that these wastes are still intensively geochemically active.

Peat bog deposits provide a very important record of past environmental conditions, preserving biotic and abiotic processes that occurred in the vicinity of the bog. In this study, we examined three peat bog profiles from Kietrz, located in the micro-region of the Głubczycki Plateau, southern Poland. The objective of this study was to determine the type of peat occurring in this area, through examination of its mineral composition, and evaluation of the total carbon and total sulphur content. In addition, we measured peat reaction (pH) and identified floral and faunal components occurring within the peat deposits. The peat comprises primarily of fragments of fossilized plant and mollusk remains, as well as minerals (calcium sulphates, calcium carbonates, and pyrites). Additionally, an assemblage of iron oxides/hydroxides, Kfeldspar, apatite, zircon, and quartz grains was identified. A neutral and/or light alkalinity was recorded for the peat deposits, but an increase in acidity (pH) with increasing depth through each peat profile was also recorded. We observed a positive correlation between the pH and chemical composition of deposits, where a significant presence of calcite is associated with higher reaction (higher pH), whilst a lower pH is characteristic for sediments where carbonates are rare. The recognized species of mollusks are typical of shallow, fresh-water stagnant reservoirs with a high fluctuation of water level.
