Współczesna architektura Gdyni ma swą wyraźną specyfikę. Wynika to w dużym stopniu z faktu, że jest ona w sposób dość czytelny inspirowana architekturą dwudziestolecia międzywojennego. Od czasu, gdy na początku lat 90. XX w. etos lat międzywojennych został „odzyskany" i ponownie odkryty w świadomości społecznej, realizacje architektoniczne tamtego okresu zaczęły funkcjonować jako swoiste wzory. Wzory te czerpane są z trojakiego źródła. Pierwszym takim źródłem są lokalne, gdyńskie ikony architektoniczne lat dwudziestych i trzydziestych - wizualne znaki tamtych lat. Po drugie, inspiracją dla współczesnej architektury gdyńskiej stały się odniesienia symboliczne, które obecne były w architekturze międzywojennej i mocno wrosły w jej tradycję. I po trzecie wreszcie, architekci chętnie sięgają dziś również do uniwersalnego paradygmatu estetycznego międzywojennego modernizmu, znajdując w nich wciąż interesujące plastycznie motywy.

The contemporary architecture of Gdynia has its own specific. It comes from the fact, that it is in a clear way inspired by the architecture of inter-war period. From the year 1989 on, when the ethos of that period was again recovered from obscurity after the years of communism, the architectural ideas of that time has became a kind of model, inspiration and the pattern to follow. There are generally three sources of those models and inspirations. The first are the local, "Gdynian" icons of the inter-war architecture - the visual symbols of those years. The second source of inspiration has became the nautical symbols, which were present in the inter-war architectura of Gdynia and are deeply rooted in its tradition. And finally, the third pattern to follow for the contemporary architects in Gdynia is the universal aesthetic paradigm of European Modernism, in which they still find interesting motives. One must say therefore, that all those models and inspiritions ara not literally quoted. They are rather used as a free reference for a new creativity.

Ewolucja form modernistycznych okresu międzywojennego wyznaczana były w dużym stopniu przez stosunek do spuścizny klasycznej. Obserwujemy to zarówno architekturze europejskiej lat międzywojennych, jak i w architekturze polskiej. Na jednym biegunie znajdowała się estetyka tradycyjna, estetyka klasycyzmu; na drugim – jej przeciwieństwo – modernistyczny ruch awangardowy. Między tymi ideowymi skrajnościami rozwijała się w architekturze cała paleta formacji stylowych mniej radykalnych, pośrednich, które ze względu na swe cechy stylowe określić można wspólnym mianem umiarkowanego modernizmu. Kierunek ten wypełniał istotną lukę w estetyce epoki, proponując język reprezentacji i monumentalizmu w ramach kanonu modernistycznego.

Evolution of Modernism during the 1920s and 1930s were defined to some extend by the attitude to classical tradition. We can see it both in European and Polish architecture. On the one hand there was the still existing classicist mode, and on the other the modern avant-garde, which was completely opposite to the former. Between these two extremes there were some different architectural trends, which – due to their stylistic features – we can refer to with the common name: Moderate Modernism. Its popularity derives from the fact, that it compensated for some shortcomings of the avant-garde architecture. Modern Modernism offered the language of monumentality and representation within the canons of modern aesthetics.
