The start-up is a transient state of operation of an internal combustion engine during which many negative phenomena occur that affect the technical condition of the engine, its electrical equipment and the natural environment. The start-up process of an internal combustion engine is influenced by many factors, such as: technical condition of the starting system, technical condition of the engine, battery charge level, lubricant properties, engine standstill time, engine temperature, etc. Mechanical energy is required to start the engine, supplied by an electric starter by drives the engine’s crankshaft. Knowledge about the operating parameters of the electric starter during the start-up process is important not only for the user of the engine (vehicle driver), but above all for designers of modern combustion engine starting systems and service personnel. The paper presents the results of experimental tests of electrical parameters of the single-cylinder diesel engine start-up process at variable fuel injection parameters under ambient temperature conditions.

Main requirements for rolling stock design and organization of the operating system are determined by membership in a certain transportation category for which such a transportation facility is designated. Thus, a specific feature of rolling stock operation is considered to the maximum extent, and functional correspondence with stated tasks is ensured. The significant disadvantage of the existing structure of rolling stock traffic is the necessity of time-space agreements of passenger traffic due to the necessity of shifting different transport types with the minimum time consumption. The solution to such an issue can be found in the development and use of a universal (multifunctional) integrated transport system. The list of issues arising during the creation of a multifunctional transport system can be funnelled into two groups: social and economic and organizational and technical. The first group is social and economic and shall conceptually solve issues of the multifunctional system feasibility for certain urban settlement conditions (conglomerate of urban settlements). The second group consists of organizational and technical issues. This study proposes to eliminate certain material issues in the sphere of suburban and urban traffic by the infrastructure improvement with the significant traffic increase and fluctuations.

Modern city buses are made of various construction materials and the share of material groups has changed over the decades. By replacing heavy materials for structural elements or bus components with their lighter counterparts, the kerb weight of the bus can be reduced by up to several hundred kilograms. This article presents the issues of the development of city bus design in terms of passenger space comfort and bus structure in the context of reducing the vehicle's own weight since the 1970s. The main changes in vehicle design allowing for reducing the weight of structural elements of bodies and chassis as well as the main assemblies in city buses are presented as well as research on body types in terms of aerodynamics, safety and travel comfort. It has been shown that reducing the weight of the bus does not negatively affect its load capacity and the new bus designs are equipped with safety and comfort systems, including ABS (Anti-lock Braking System), ASR (Automatic Stability Regulation), ESP (Electronic Stability Program) and air conditioning in the passenger space. Thanks to modern light construction materials, we gain the opportunity to improve safety and comfort without losing the transport capabilities developed as a result of the development of city buses over the years.

The rapid increase in the number of cars in Lithuania and abroad every year (Statistics of traffic accidents in Lithuania), ensuring road safety is becoming an increasingly important and relevant aspect for road users and other responsible institutions. In the statistics of traffic accidents in Lithuania, no information is provided according to the nature of the vehicle collision, nor is there any information on the damage caused by the vehicle to the victim according to the type of collision. The work analyzes the security situation and emergency factors based on statistics. Factors determining the occurrence of traffic accidents are analyzed. A visual analysis of "black spots" was performed to determine the main factors of higher accidents. Statistical data and comparative analysis methods are used for the research. Calculated traffic incidents and the amount of damage caused by them are analyzed according to the type of collision.

Passenger cars are a means of transportation used widely for various purposes. The category that a vehicle belongs to is largely responsible for determining its size and storage capacity. There are situations when the capacity of a passenger vehicle is not sufficient. On the one hand, this insufficient capacity is related to a paucity in the space needed for stowing luggage. It is possible to mount a rooftop cargo carrier or a roof basket on the roof of a vehicle. If a vehicle is equipped with a towbar, a towbar cargo carrier can be used for improving its space capacity. These accessories, however, offer limited additional space, and the maximal load is determined by the maximal payload of the concerned vehicle. If, on the other hand, there is a requirement for transporting a load with a mass or dimensions that are greater than what could be supported using these accessories, then, provided the vehicle is equipped with a towbar, a trailer represents an elegant solution for such demanding requirements. A standard flat trailer allows the transportation of goods of various characters, such as goods on pallets, bulk material, etc. However, the towing of a trailer changes the distribution of the loads, together with changes of loads of individual axes of the vehicle–trailer axles. The distribution of the loads is one of the key factors affecting the driving properties of a vehicle–trailer combination in terms of driving stability, which is mainly a function of the distribution of the load on the trailer. This research introduces a study into how the distribution of the load on a trailer influences the driving stability of a vehicle–trailer combination. The research activities are based on simulation computations performed in a commercial multibody software. While the results presented in the article are reached for a particular vehicle–trailer combination as well as for a particular set of driving conditions, the applicability of the findings can also be extended more generally to the impact that the load distributions corresponding to various vehicle–trailer combinations have on the related parameters and other driving properties.

Road transport safety, apart from environmental protection, is one of the most important tasks for the contemporary world. Annually, about 50 million people are injured in road accidents around the world, of which nearly 1.5 million die as a result. Transport safety consists of many activities and includes various initiatives, including legal changes, training, preventive actions, building safe road infrastructure, and the production of safe vehicles and control systems. This article deals with the issue of performing roadside technical inspections in the Slovak Republic. Specifically, it analyses the results of these oadside technical inspections in individual counties of the Slovak Republic and examines their possible impact on transport and logistics systems in these counties. The correlation analysis showed that the number of checks under the technical roadside inspections is weakly related to the number of logistics centres, but the number of such inspections is moderate in relation to the number of failed vehicles (correlation coefficient = 0.44079). In addition, due to the age of the vehicles, the number of serious and dangerous faults found on them during maintenance inspection increases.

The driver’s reaction time is one of the most important parameters for the road pre-accident analysis. There are known the results of tests, in which the value of this parameter was determined in expected and unexpected road situations. But in some cases, this time may be longer e.g. in situations in which the driver’s attention may be distracted by keeping observations other than the area, in front of the car’s surroundings. There are many manoeuvres, when the driver is obliged to observe many areas at the same time. Thus, his attention must be turned away from the main area – in front of the vehicle. The paper presents the results of tests involving the measurement of the driver’s attention time focused on observing the surrounding other than the car’s path. During the test, the driver’s attention was focus on observing the side and back mirror, car radio and at the mobile phone. Certain values can be potentially considered as extending the typical driver’s reaction time. The results of the presented tests have practical applications and can be used in the process of issuing opinions on traffic accidents.

The dynamic development of motoring observed in the last two decades contributes to many negative phenomena occurring in road transport Distinguished among these negative phenomena are high share of car traffic, road accidents, emission of toxic exhaust fumes into the atmosphere, etc. For these reasons, many initiatives are taken in the field of road transport management and city logistics. Traffic problems are solved from many aspects, such as the development of transport infrastructure, changing of urban transport organisation, parking organisation in city centre and Park & Ride system, as well as the progress of alternative means of transport. The problem of traffic congestion in urban areas is still a current topic. This article presents the formation of congestion in urban areas in chosen big cities in Poland. The first part of the article deals with the theoretical issues of traffic flow and congestion formation in the city road networks. The second part of the article outlines the situation of transport congestion with these cities based on the worldwide TomTom Traffic Index within the period of 2008-2016. This study is a brief analysis of the trends relating to the transport congestion based on the TomTom Traffic Index in Polish cities, which will allow future researchers a wider study of this problem. The authors suggest some solutions to reduce the level of transport congestion and harmful emissions from means of transport.

In connection with the limited resources of fossil fuels and the reduction of emissions and stimulation of agricultural areas, a very important indication is the search for alternative fuels – biofuels. The article presents the results of testing the lubricating properties of selected fuel mixtures. The lubricity of diesel fuel (DF), DF with 7% content of methyl esters of rapeseed oil fatty acids (RME), technical linoleic acid and DF with 7% content of RME and 10% content of technical linoleic acid was tested. The research was carried out on the author's research stand in the amount of 20 dm3 of mixture. Four parameters were taken into account: mass loss of samples, the footprint area of cooperation, diameter of equivalent wheel and average value of the coefficient of friction. It has been shown that the addition of linoleic acid to diesel fuel containing RME causes a significant increase in the mass loss of the samples and the footprint area of cooperation as well as its diameter of equivalent wheel, during lubrication with such a mixture. As a result of the addition of linoleic acid, no positive results were obtained, as the lubricating properties in this case deteriorated. Therefore, it is justified to continue looking for fuel additives that will eliminate this negative effect.

LPG is a cheap and ecological fuel for spark ignition engines. The sequential gas injection system can be installed at the factory and is then the Original Equipment of the Manufacturer. A vehicle with a spark ignition engine can also be converted to gas in an authorized workshop. In both cases, the vehicle must meet the same exhaust emission standards when running on alternative fuel as it does with the original fuel. Conversion of vehicles to LPG and CNG is regulated by law at the European Union level. The article describes the conversion of a low-emission gasoline vehicle that meets the Euro 6 emission standard to LPG. The configuration and calibration of the LPG system is described in detail. The compatibility of the gas system with the vehicle's on-board diagnostic system was then checked. Finally, road tests of the vehicle were carried out to compare the performance with the original fuel and the alternative fuel.

Vibration energy harvesting systems are using real ambient sources of vibration excitation. In our paper, we study the dynamical voltage response of the piezoelectric vibrational energy harvesting system (PVEHs) with a mechanical resonator possessing an amplitude limiter. The PVEHs consist of the cantilever beam with a piezoelectric patch. The proposed system was subjected to the inertial excitation from the engine suspension. Impacts of the beam resonator are useful to increase of system’s frequency transition band. The suitable simulations of the resonator and piezoelectric transducer are performed by using measured signal from the engine suspension. Voltage outputs of linear (without amplitude limiter) and nonlinear harvesters were compared indicating better efficiency of the nonlinear design.
