Autorzy przeprowadzili wstępne badania kliniczne na 16 pacjentach ze zdiagnozowanym stwardnieniem rozsianym (Sclerosis multiplex) o średnim okresie trwania choroby wynoszącym 9,33 lat i objawami ocenionymi na podstawie skali Kurtzkego. Pacjenci przebyli od 25 do 30 ekspozycji hiperbarycznych w ciśnieniu wynoszącym 2 ata realizowanych w odstępach kilkudniowych. Chorzy zostali zakwalifikowani do badań oraz sklasyfikowani na podstawie prezentowanych objawów w zgodzie z ustaleniami Fishera, zaś wyniki oceniono na podstawie znormalizostanej Skali Niewydolności Ruchowej opracowanej przez Kurtzkego. W toku prowadzonych badań autorzy wykonali dodatkowe oznaczenia immunoglobulin, aktywności dopełniacza, limfocytów T i B oraz standardowe badania kliniczne i laboratoryjne. Wyraźną poprawę stanu zdrowia zaobserwowano u 14 pacjentów, w przypadku jednego pacjenta po przebyciu 15 ekspozycji odnotowano pogorszenie stanu (przerwano leczenie hiperbarią tlenową), zaś w przypadku jednego pacjenta nie zauważono żadnego wpływu leczniczego wdrożonej terapii. W zakresie badanych parametrów imunologicznych, autorzy zaobserwowali wzrost frakcji dopełniacza i jego aktywności przy użyciu metody 50% hemolizy, zaś badanie jakościowe białych limfocytów T i B nie wykazało charakterystycznych zmian. Autorzy kontunuują dyskusję nad uzyskanymi wynikami.

The authors conducted the preliminary clinical investigation on 16 multiple sclerosis (Sclerosis multiplex) patients of median disease duration 9.33 years and symptoms evaluated on Kurtzke’s scale. The patients underwent between 25 and 30 hyperbaric oxygen exposures at a pressure of 2 ata in intervals spread over a few days. The patients were qualified and classified to the treatment symptomatologically according to Fisher but the obtained results were evaluated according to the standardised Disability Status Scale by Kurtzke. During the investigations the authors carried out additional quantitative immunoglobulin and complement activity determination, lymphocyte T and B determinations as well as the usually applied clinical and laboratory investigations. Evident clinical improvement was observed in 14 patients, but in the case of one patient a deterioration was observed after 15 hyperbaric expositions (resulting in the hyperbaric oxygen treatment being stopped), whilst in another case no curative effect could be observed. By utilising the 50% haemolysis method, within the examined immunological parameters the authors observed an increase of complement fractions and its activity, white lymphocytes T and B examined qualitatively did not maintain the characteristic shift. The authors are still discussing the obtained results.

Effects of trophic conditions on benthic macrofauna in the vicinity of the River Swina mouth (Pomeranian Bay; southern Baltic Sea)

The export of phytal material from the eutrophic Szczecin Lagoon into the Pomeranian Bay creates excellent trophic conditions for the local benthic fauna in the vicinity of the mouth of the river Swina, where the bottom macrofauna is abundant but highly variable. The changes in the bottom macrofauna biomass of selected taxa, chlorophyll a and nutrient concentrations were tested for associations. The biomasses of selected taxa varied in significant concordance, which suggests that these changes have common causes. Despite the importance of trophic enrichment to faunal abundance, no relationships between faunal biomass and chlorophyll a concentration changes were established. The presence of organic matter enables macrofauna to attain a high biomass, but population fluctuations are controlled by numerous factors. The significant relationship between the changes in the annual average phosphate levels and chlorophyll a concentrations in the Szczecin Lagoon indicates the importance of this nutrient to primary production processes in the Lagoon and to the trophic conditions for benthic macrofauna in the vicinity of the Swina mouth.
